The city of Khartoum is the capital of the Republic of Sudan (on the African continent). Population: 1,970,000.
15°32'38.35"N 32°32'8.44"E
Physically it is located in the central-eastern part of the country at the confluence of the Blue Nile and the White Nile tributaries. The Nile rivers divide Khartoum like an inverted Y, the city of Khartoum is located to the south with the White Nile to the left and the Blue Nile to the right of the city (when facing North); the Nile tributaries converge at the north-western corner of the city. On the western side of the inverted Y is the old city of Omduruman and on the eastern side (of the inverted Y) is Khartoum North (which is more industrial and light industrial).
The city its self is not very sophisticated, years of sanctions and poor economic conditions have resulted in the deterioration of the infrastructure (roads, electricity and buildings); although over the past few years more money is being spent to upgrade these - in some areas it is a matter of too little too late. Most builidings are constructed from a combination of concrete and sun-dried mud bricks (brickwork's are plentiful along the river during the dry season).
The parliamentary buildings, museum and some hotels are situated along Nile Avenue which is on the Blue Nile along the Northern border of the city.
Khartoum is also home base to a large number of international aid organisations (UN, Care etc.) due to its proximity to Darfur and other points of humanitarian interest within the region.
The city is serviced by a single domestic airport which is located in the heart of the city; and which in recent years has been the site of numerous aircraft accidents.
Founded c. 1821 as an Egyptian army camp, it was destroyed by Mahdists in 1885. Lord Kitchener retook the city in 1898 and oversaw its rebuilding. In earlier history Khartoum may have been used as a trading station by the Nubians and Egyptians due to its location on the River Nile. The area surround Khartoum is dotted with numerous ancient Egyptian ruins.

Is Sudan a less developed country?
Sudan is the largest country in Africa and the Arab world, and tenth largest in the world by area. It has a great and long history going back to the Pharaohic times and a wonderful people with a rich cultural heritage.
However, Sudan's political regime appears, from the outside, to be mired in ethnic wars, corruption and racial violence. This means that the country can not develop or participate in civilized world society while these conditions remain. Therefore, sadly, the answer is 'Yes' Sudan is a less developed country.
[Note that the country has now split into two, with the mainly christian south forming the new country of South Sudan].

Sudan is a third world, or developing, country. The majority of people are very poor and live in small tribal communities. The Genocide currently taking place in that country has made matters much worse, with thousands of people dying every day.

What are major imports of Sudan?
Ethiopia's major category of import items was consumer goods, which accounted for about one-third of the value of imports during the period EFY l984/85 to EFY 1988/89. Capital goods, primarily machinery and transportation equipment, accounted for another 39 percent, with fuel, semifinished goods, and durable consumer goods accounting for the other third of the value of imports. A major structural change in Ethiopia's imports was the relative increase in the importation of food items. During the three years ending in EFY l986/87, cereals and other food items accounted for 22 percent of the total value of imports; in l974 cereal and food items had accounted for only 4.6 percent. As a result, the share of nondurable consumer items jumped from l6.8 percent in l974 to 34.2 percent in l985. It dropped to 24.9 percent in EFY l986/87.
Imports provided the capital and intermediate goods upon which industry depended. Imports also satisfied most of the country's demand for nonfood consumer goods, such as automobiles, radios, televisions, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. In the five years ending in EFY l986/87, the relative share of the value of transportation and transportation equipment increased, reflecting the country's increasing demand for trucks and other heavy road vehicles needed to transport food to areas affected by drought and famine.
Most of Ethiopia's imports came from Western countries. Italy, the United States, West Germany, and Japan, in order of importance, accounted for 45 percent of total imports in l987. The Soviet Union accounted for l6 percent of the value of imports in l987. By contrast, Ethiopia's exports to the Soviet Union amounted to only 5 percent of total exports in 1987. The relatively high proportion of imports from the Soviet Union was largely because of oil; in l987 Ethiopia received virtually all its crude petroleum from the Soviet Union. In l987 the United States remained Ethiopia's major trading partner despite cool relationships between the two countries; the United States ranked first in buying Ethiopia's exports and third in satisfying Ethiopia's import needs.
Yes, people in Sudan do use money. The currency of Sudan is the Sudanese Pound.
Why is the genocide going on in darfur?
From everything I can understand - the Muslim Arab Sudanese of the North are trying to rid Sudan of (or take-over and convert by force) all the Southern African Sudanese - many of whom are Christian (Catholic and other) or animist.
No. Yemen is not a member due to its low oil production and proven reserves.
Why did southern Sudan wanted to break away from Sudan?
There have been tensions between both parts for many years. I think the main reasons were that most Northern Sudanese speak Arabic and are Muslims, while the Southerners were mainly either Christians or believe traditional African beliefs, and are poorer than those in the North. Furthermore, the cultural differences are massive, as the population of South Sudan is split into different tribes.
What are some customs of Sudan?
There are so many customs and traditions in Egypt, and even in Africa. Many Egyptians wear turbans, and cloaks, to conceal their bodies from sunlight. They travel mostly on foot, but sometimes ride camels, or other cattle. A lot of Egyptians make a living by fishing or ranching. They get about $10 dollars a day, which is an amazing income to them. They can buy so many things at the local markets with $10. Egyptian people are very smart. The first Egyptians introduced hunting and gathering to many others. We know this because paintings show the animals and the weapons that people used. Some cities in Egypt are rioting at this time. Bad government can lead to those things. The president refuses to step down, so therefore millions of people are out on the streets. This is ruining the reputation! Most roads are not paved, and Egypt is mostly a developing country. There are barely any developed cities in Egypt.
Only part of the Sahara Desert is found in Sudan (north Sudan). The Sahara Desert is vast and streaches through most north African countries.

What type of religion is practiced in Sudan?
Sudan, like other nations of north Africa, is predominantly Muslim, but it also has a Christian population, as well as animists, who retain the earlier, shamanic religion of Africa.
Officially:
Muslim 75% (mainly Sunni Muslims) - Mostly in the North
Indigenous Religions 25% (Mostly in the South)
Christian 5% (Mostly in the West and central parts of the country)
The governing law of the land is Muslim Sharia Law.
Un-officially the "split" between Musilm and Christian may be as much as 50/ 40 and 10% indigenous beliefs.
