When should you throw out suntan lotion?
Suntan lotion or sunscreens do not lose their effectiveness very rapidly, but eventually oxidize or clump. Some lotions containing organic chemicals can be substantially degraded within a year or two after being opened, but will still offer some protection. If you find that it is not working as well as needed, you should buy new lotion. The shelf life of some products is 3 years.

If you were laying on a black towel at the beach, it would get hotter than a white towel, but a white towel can reflect the sun onto areas not in direct sun, such as the undersides of the legs, burning you more.In theory anyway. I've never seen a controlled test.

What's a good SPF sunscreen so that you wont burn but you can still get a good tan?
This depends where you are located. In hotter countries i used 30 and got an amazing tan! But in places such as Canada and Cooler States i often only use a 15 and don't get nearly as great of a tan. If you want a hot tan for back to school, or even just to feel great about yourself; you might have to experiment with different SPF's and different brands. Yes, even brands will determine how much of a tan you get. If you have paler skin start with a 30 (or higher) and work your way down as you get more tanned. If you are darker skinned I would start with a 15, and see how you are from there.
Good luck, and hope this helped my soon to be gorgeously tanned friend.
(EDIT BY KABOB34: SPF 8 is good, as well as SPF 15.)

Not break out, however most makeup products contain an SPF which is going to prevent you from tanning. Tanning dries out your skin, ( USE LOTION! FACIAL LOTIONS TOO!) which doesnt normally lead to a breakout.
Will you tan better with a bronzer or intensifier?
Bronzers and intensifiers have basically opposite results. They will both make you tan, but in different ways. Intensifiers have ingredients that will make your skin produce melanin faster and darker while you tan, so you can get a deeper, natural tan with an intensifier. Bronzers just have pigments in them that will stain the skin brown so you look more tan while you are building your skin's natural tan. It all depends on how fast you want to be dark.

Is it better to have a spray tan by a person or from machine?
the answer to his ( in my mind ) seems quite obvious. Spray tans are more accurate by a person in this case. Machines are designed to spray around you and on your body , but if they miss a spot they do not register it , they just carry on. If you get a spray tan from a person they will notice the mistake or you can point it out. In conclusion a manual spray tan by a person is alot better.
