Why does sunburn hurt so much?
Burns hurt because when the skin is burned, the skin tries to get rid of the heat as fast as possible. It does this by all the capillaries opening wide (most of them usually aren't). But when they stay wide open too long, they rupture, causing further damage, and sometimes tissue death. Cuts hurt too, but the deeper the cut, the less it hurts. Most of the nerves in your skin are loacted along the more shallow layers of skin (this is also why a paper cut can hurt a lot more than a more serious deep cut). A deeper cut severs nerves...no nerves, no pain. Have a burn (or a cut)? Cover the area with a cool, wet terrycloth towel and keep it covered for about 8 hours, and change it when it gets too warm (you'll know because the pain will get worse as it gets warmer). This will often help to relieve the pain. Tammy F

I don't think so, but it's not recommended for a bad or severe burn, if you have a bad burn use tea, aloe Vera, or plain yogurt. If you use ice make shure you wrap it in a bag or something, because the ice sucks up the heat. But it can be bad if you just plop ice cubes on your back

Should you put heat or ice on a pinched nerve?
Heat, anti-inflammatories, and a muscle relaxer if you've got it. Like pinched nerves in the back (from disk herniations), a lot of the real pain from pinched neck nerves (which can indicate a disk problem in the cervical spine as well) comes from the muscles spasms caused by the nerve being compressed.
Heat helps loosen the muscles, and allows for increased blood flow to the area to heal. If you do use cold (it does help some people, but it can irritate already sensitive nerves) use it for short periods, then add heat.
What it boils down to is that the combination reduces the inflammation, relaxes the muscle spasms, and increases blood flow to promote faster healing.
Why are you less likely to get sunburn with low sun?
A lower sun means that the rays have to travel through more atmosphere. That filters out more of the harmful rays, making it harder to burn. When the sun is at it's highest point in the sky, it has the least amount of atmosphere to get through.
What type of heat transfer occurs when you get a sunburn?
Radiation
Not really. Sunburn is not caused by heat at all, but by overexposure to ultra-violet (specifically UV-B) radiation. It causes damage directly to the DNA rather than heat damage to the skin.
While the answer 'radiation' is technically correct as UV is a type of radiation, sunburn is not caused by heat transfer at all.
