Tae Kwon Do is the art of hand and foot fighting. The original empty hand pattens created by gen. Choi were templated from Shotokan Karate. The Gen was a 2nd Dan in Shotokan
upon his return to Korea. So the term Hyung is the appropriate reference for the original patterns. The Shotokan Kata,s were also included as part of the original 2nd to 4th Dan requirements for Tae Kwon Do in its infancy.
This information can be found in the first publication by Gen. Choi.

How is Tae Kwon Do like a religion?
Many athletes and fans become so dedicated to their sport that they refer to it as a way of life or a religion. Their critics might refer to it only as an obsession. This is true of both western sports and eastern sports; however, many Asian martial arts have the added element of Buddhist meditation as an element of training. Through medication, martial artists can learn to control their ki or life force. This type of control can make it possible for them to exceed the abilities of athletes who do not train in this way.
Who were the greatest Tae Kwon Do competitors?
No one - taekwondo made its Olympic debut in 1988 at the Seoul, Korea Games (appropriately enough). It continued as a demonstration sport at 1992 Games in Barcelona, Spain. Taekwondo was not part of the 1996 Atlanta Games. The International Olympic Committee voted against inclusion of demonstrations sports. Taekwondo became a medal sport at the 2000 Sydney, Australia Games. It continued as an Olympic sport in 2004 at the Athens, Greece Games and in 2008at the Beijiing, China Games.
Following several controversial scoring decisions and upsets and the very unsportsmanlike behavior of the athlete from Cuba, there was fear that taekwondo would be cut from the roster in 2012, but taekwondo has been confirmed as an Olympic sport for the 2012 Games in London and also for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Taekwondo is an education about life, philosophy, character building, health & fitness, and self defense. Taekwondo itself does not have responsibilities, but each individual student, teacher, Master, and organization should have responsibilities and pass them on to subsequent generations.
Responsibilities of the Taekwondoin as a Martial Artist include properly learning the art thoroughly; training with diligence and dedication; instilling in one's self a sense of respect (an appreciation for the value of someone) toward seniors, instructors, parents, and others in positions of authority; following rules and laws where appropriately enforced; helping others by guiding or teaching the art correctly and completely; living peacefully in society and treating others with courtesy; and ultimately applying the skills only for just, moral and ethical purpose.
How can you cancel a legal membership contract?
This question pertains to seeking legal advice, which is usually not a good idea to obtain via the internet. For the best answer to this question, you should seek qualified legal advice from a lawyer who is familiar with contract law in your area. The following answer should not be construed as legal advice, but just some things to consider.
Many jurisdictions in the United States, for example, require that membership contracts include several different clauses to protect the consumer. One of which includes the right of the consumer to cancel the contract by written notice within a specific time frame (often 5 - 10 business days) from the signing of the contract with no reason needed. If that time has elapsed, then you might be required to honor the contract, unless another clause allows cancellation.
One such clause might pertain to the health of the student, or injury preventing participation in physical activity. This usually requires a doctor's written statement.
Another clause might be a transfer clause which would pertain to the customer moving beyond a reasonable distance from the place of business where the contract is held. Also, if the business moves to a location that makes travel an unreasonable burden
Of course, if there is any way that the contract holder has violated the contract, and failed to provide services in a manner consistent with the agreement, then the contract might be determined as void in a court of law.
Although this should not be interpreted as legal advice, as an experienced Martial Art instructor, I would say that the best thing to do, if no other options are available, is to talk to the school owner. Explain why you want to be released from the contract, and see if they are willing to do so out of courtesy. Many school owners rely on the commitment of regular payments from their customers so that they can keep their business operating, and cover their expenses and financial obligations (not to mention make a decent living off a reasonable profit).
If there is a legitimate problem, and reason why you want to cancel, most fair-minded Instructors will find a way to compromise, or work something out to resolve the issue. If the school owner is too greedy and profit driven, you might have no other choice but to pay for the entire contract, and then choose to either avail yourself of the services, or write it off as a loss, and don't attend classes any more.
