Oseltamivir is indicated for the treatment and prevention of infections due to influenza A and B virus in people at least one year of age. The usual adult dosage for treatment of influenza is 75 mg twice daily for 5 days, beginning within 2 days of the appearance of symptoms and with decreased doses for children and patients with renal impairment. Oseltamivir may be given as a preventive measure either during a community outbreak or following close contact with an infected individual. Standard prophylactic dosage is 75 mg once daily for patients aged 13 and older, which has been shown to be safe and effective for up to six weeks. The importance of early treatment is that the NA protein inhibition is more effective within the first 48 hours. If the virus has replicated and infected many cells the effectiveness of this medication will be severely diminished, especially over time.http://www.answers.com/topic/oseltamivir#cite_note-rocheinfo-3http://www.answers.com/topic/oseltamivir#cite_note-rossi_2006-4The standard recommended dose incompletely suppresses viral replication in at least some patients with http://www.answers.com/topic/h5n1 http://www.answers.com/topic/bird-flu, increasing the risk of viral resistance and rendering therapy less effective.http://www.answers.com/topic/oseltamivir#cite_note-de_jong_2005-5 Accordingly, it has been suggested that higher doses and longer durations of therapy should be used for treatment of patients with the H5N1 virus.http://www.answers.com/topic/oseltamivir#cite_note-de_jong_2005-5http://www.answers.com/topic/oseltamivir#cite_note-ward_et_al._2005-6Clinical trials for an increased dosage were set to begin by May 2007. Should you be on Tamiflu if your child has H1N1?

No. Tamiflu is only for those with the Swine Flu. Taking it as a preventative could cause mutation of the virus....making it immune to Tamiflu. If you start to have flu-like symptoms, I recommend you go see your physician.

Is it safe to take Tamiflu and penicillin at the same time?

The literature from the manufacturer of Tamiflu (oseltamivir) does not list that as a potential drug interaction problem. However, you should always notify your prescribing doctor if you are taking other medicines before you take any new prescriptions or use over the counter medicines with them.

The Tamiflu literature does state:

Information derived from pharmacology and pharmacokinetic studies of oseltamivir suggests that clinically significant drug interactions are unlikely.

No pharmacokinetic interactions have been observed when coadministering oseltamivir with amoxicillin, acetaminophen, cimetidine or with antacids (magnesium and aluminum hydroxides and calcium carbonates).

Can you take Advil and aramol together?

Yes, you can take Advil and paracetamol together. Advil works best for treating inflammation and reducing pain while paracetamol targets a fever.

Can you take Tamiflu if im allergic to penicillin?

No. Tamiflu is an anti-viral drug while aspirin is an NSAID (used for inflammation) and penicillin is an antibiotic (doesn't treat viral infections). There's no reason why Tamiflu should contain aspirin or penicillin.

However, don't confuse Tamiflu with TM-FLU (completely different drug) which appears to contain penicillin and is a scam/fraudulent product. Do not use TM-FLU.

For more info on the TM-FLU scam see the related question below in the related links section.

Is tamiflu a medicine?

Tamiflu is an antiviral medicine that is made from the generic drug called oseltamivir, using the chemical oseltamivir phosphate. It works to inhibit the ability of the one of the surface proteins on the "shell" of the virus to cause the release of newly reproduced viruses from the body cells they have invaded.

Ingredient information from the manufacturer:

"The drug comes in capsule form, and a powder form that can be made into a liquid. Besides the active ingredient of Oseltamivir, each capsule contains pregelatinized starch, talc, povidone K 30, croscarmellose sodium, and sodium stearyl fumarate.

The 30 mg capsule shell contains gelatin, titanium dioxide, yellow iron oxide, and red iron oxide. The 45 mg capsule shell contains gelatin, titanium dioxide, and black iron oxide. The 75 mg capsule shell contains gelatin, titanium dioxide, yellow iron oxide, black iron oxide, and red iron oxide. Each capsule is printed with blue ink, which includes FD&C Blue No. 2 as the colorant.

In addition to the active ingredient, the powder for oral suspension contains sorbitol, monosodium citrate, xanthan gum, titanium dioxide, tutti-frutti flavoring, sodium benzoate, and saccharin sodium.

Oseltamivir phosphate is a white crystalline solid with the chemical name (3R,4R,5S)-4acetylamino-5-amino-3(1-ethylpropoxy)-1-cyclohexene-1-carboxylic acid, ethyl ester, phosphate (1:1). The chemical formula is C16H28N2O4 (free base). "

Some people have a condition called post nasal drip. It has been recommended that a medication called SinusWars2 can help to loosen mucus and stop the running down the back of the throat problem. Yellow or green mucus is a possible sign of an infection. Since your mucus is clear you may not have an infection.

Another answer:

There is a product that I found in Thailand called N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine in many different forms right behind the counter. It was sold to smokers(everyone in Asia smokes cigarettes) to relieve phlegm. I have no clue why it is not popular here. In the states this drug is considered a vitamin and has been shown to boost your immune system and has shown signs of counterattacking bi-polar depression as well. The recommended dosage is 1000 milligrams daily, but I usually only take 500 mgs a day to save money. It is cheap though ($8 for 100 capsules).

Another answer:

Medications with guaifenesin are very effective to loosen mucus and help expectorate it. Robitusin is a common brand of cough medicine that uses this active ingredient. It is also in Mucinex. Guaifenesin is a natural substance that is plant-derived.

Can you take a z pack while taking Tamiflu?

Yes. According to the Tamiflu prescription information:

TAMIFLU has been shown to have a minimal chance of negatively interacting with other medications. Over-the-counter medications may be prescribed to reduce severity of symptoms while the antiviral action of TAMIFLU takes effect.

Antibiotics and Tamiflu should be OK taken together, however, depending on the reason for the antibiotic, you may want to get counseling from the Pharmacist or your doctor before using both.

Remember that Tamiflu is an antiviral and is for treating viral infections, not for treating bacterial infections. Antibiotics, like Z-pack are made for treating bacterial infections.

Can you take Tamiflu for swine flu prophylaxis?

Tamiflu is an antiviral medication that is most effective when taken within 40 hours of the first symptoms to prevent a virus from reproducing. This prevention of the virus's reproduction is accomplished by inhibiting the action of a protein that would otherwise enable the release of new virus particles from the infected person's cells, in which they have developed. Tamiflu is most effective as a treatment, instead of for prophylaxis (prevention of infection).

It does not actually stop the virus from invading your cells in the first place. But it can make your symptoms less severe, and it will make the duration of the viral infection shorter. If started within one day, or under 40 hours at the latest, of the first symptoms, it may even make the symptoms very minor or negligible in some people. This treatment to reduce the severity of symptoms and their duration is the most common reason for prescription of the drug. It is one of the two antiviral drugs that are effective in the treatment of the "Novel" A-H1N1/09 strain of influenza.

It is approved also for use as a prophylactic for people over one year old, when there is known virus in a household or community. If the timing is just right to stop the release of the virus particles that are made from the first cells to be infected by the virus, it can help avoid any flu symptoms and control the reproduction of the virus so that only the minimum number of cells will be invaded. This is how it can be used as a prophylactic aid.

According to the indications and efficacy statements in the Tamiflu patient information,

"In a pooled analysis of two seasonal prophylaxis studies in healthy unvaccinated adults (aged 13 to 65 years), TAMIFLU 75 mg once daily taken for 42 days during a community outbreak reduced the incidence of laboratory-confirmed clinical influenza from 4.8% (25/519) for the placebo group to 1.2% (6/520) for the TAMIFLU group."

The typical incidence rate of A-H1N1/09 in communities where it has been tracked was around 6% without treatment.

How much does Tamiflu cost without insurance?

The flu shot can cost up to $25. Most insurance companies will cover the cost, or have relatively low co-pays ($5-$15, depending on your policy). Medicare covers the flu-shot for retirees and geriatric patients, and the VA covers the cost for most veterans. A number of employers, including most major medical centers, offer the flu-shot for free to their employees. Periodic free clinics are provided to under-served and those without insurance (watch your newspapers for announcements) and limited supplies of $5 flu shots are often available through pharmacies and public clinics. Again, announcements will be posted in public locations.

Why can't you take Tamiflu after three days of finding out you have swine flu?

You can take it, and in some patients it will still be very effective to reduce the duration of the symptoms and their severity, but it is most effective when started within the first 40 to 48 hours of symptoms. A physician would be able to determine if you are a candidate for the anti-viral medication, so consult your doctor if you think you may have influenza.

What is TM-FLU?

ALERT JUNE 17, 2010

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announces internet pharmacy fraud selling mislabeled drug as Tamiflu generic equivalent named TM-FLU. This is a scam.

A drug called TM-FLU from the online pharmacy called TRYDRUGS PHARMACEUTICALS PVT. LTD., at M.G. Road, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, does not contain Oseltamivir, which is the active ingredient of the well known brand of antiviral medicines, Tamiflu. This pharmaceutical company is fake and they are doing fraudulent business.

The drug, TM-FLU, will not be effective for influenza. There is no FDA approved generic Tamiflu product. Worse, TM-FLU was analyzed and it does contain Cloxacillin (one of the antibiotics of the penicillin group). This can cause deadly allergic reactions in some people, and antibiotics are not effective against the viruses that cause influenza.

The following advice is given in the FDA announcement (see link):

Consumers can also be confident that the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy Verified Internet Pharmacy Sites Seal, also known as VIPPS Seal, gives a seal of approval to pharmacy sites that apply and meet state licensure requirements. Legitimate pharmacies that carry the VIPPS seal are listed at [the website link below].

The FDA advises anyone possessing or encountering any of these fraudulent Tamiflu drugs not to use them and to contact the FDA's Office of Criminal Investigations by calling 800-551-3989, or by visiting the OCI website [see link].

Health care professionals and consumers are encouraged to report adverse events that may be related to the use of these fraudulent products to the FDA's MedWatch Program by phone at 800-FDA-1088, by fax at 800-FDA-0178, or by mail at: MedWatch, HF-2, FDA, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852-9787.

You should not use this drug. Contact the FDA as advised above, find out if they need you to hold the drug if you have it in your possession, or if you should dispose of it. If instructed to dispose, discard any remaining quantity in the proper way for your location and waste management systems.

As a caregiver for a family member with swine flu I was put on Tamiflu do I need to also get the swine flu vaccine?

Yes, probably. You should contact the health care professional who gave you the Tamiflu order and see if they recommend that you get the vaccination when it becomes available. It won't hurt to take it even if you were exposed to the virus already, and it would be better safe than sorry.

There is a chance that if your family member had confirmed A-H1N1/09 influenza and you were in direct contact with them while they were sick, you may have acquired immunity from that exposure. The Tamiflu is not the same as a vaccination and it does not prevent infection with a virus unless you get it at just the right time, usually it is given to lessen the symptoms and speed the recovery when you do contract the disease.
