When using tampons it's important to change often to prevent excessive build-up of bacteria and toxins, also alternating with pads allows your vagina to clean-out bacteria and toxins after tampon use. TSS can occur at any time, it is a myth it only occurs from leaving tampons in too long, but the longer you leave a tampon the higher the risk.
Another big factor in contracting TSS is absorbency, for each 1g absorbency TSS risks increase by up to 33% - this is because tampons dry out the vaginal tissues causing ulceration, this allows toxins responsible for TSS a more direct route into your bloodstream so higher risk of TSS. With higher absorbency damage to vagina is higher. General rule of thumb is if the tampon leaks within 1-2 hours use next absorbency up, but if not saturated after 4-6 hours use lower absorbency or switch to pads.
Type of tampon is important too - TSS has only ever been associated with rayon tampons, these types of tampons encourage bacterial growth, increase damage to vaginal tissues, lose more fibres, and contain chemicals that can effect vaginal flora. It's best to use cotton tampons which are softer, hypo-allergenic and less drying.

Females can have a hymen, this is tissue that surrounds the opening to the vagina - it is not up in the vaginal canal, it is just at the entrance of the vagina. The hymen can tear but only if penetration is forced or rough, a tampon is very unlikely to cause tearing of the hymen.

Remove the tampon straight away and don't use tampons for the rest of that cycle to give your vagina a chance to clean itself. If you have constant urge to urinate and/or you experience pain when you urinate you may have a urinary tract infection (UTI), a tampon left too long shouldn't cause this but if you think you may have a UTI or you notice any symptoms of vaginal infection you should see a doctor.

ive heard that you should use an applicator tampon- playtex are the best, BUT, if you live in Australia like me, they don't sell playtex. the only brand that has an applicator in Australia is tampax. Tampax is meant to be really bad brand cos firstly, the applicator is cardboard instead of plastic (makes it harder when applicating), secondly when they expand it can get REALLY uncomfortable and thirdly it LEAKS!!
So the best brand for Australia is probably stayfree. they have special ones for first timers (so they are small) and they glide super easy! they are called stayfree slims.
when you use it, just follow the instructions. the very very first time i tried i was trying to relax but i was tensing my muscles probs cos of the nerves and i just could NOT get it in!! so therefore, stay relaxed so your vaginal muscles open up and leave a lager space =] this was it will be able to slide in.
if it hurts or you can feel it, then pull it out and start again.
insert it an angle towards your spine.
also, try to push it in quite far so then you wont feel it =]
my very very first time, my mum was there 'helping' me, but i found it really annoying cos i couldn't concentrate. so make sure you are alone so you can focus easier and stay more calm and not tense =]

Well when I use tampons, I regularly use super tampons because on my first 2 days are my heaviest, so I usually wear a super whcih lasts about 2 hours. I have recently started using a super plus tampon, and it lasts me about 4.5 hours through the school day. I think you should use these for school or sports becuse they are really obsorbant, but always wear a panty liner or a thin and short pad. or if you are to nervous to use a super plus then a super can last a full day with a thick pad under it. because i know it could be embarassing to change your tampon at school.
