The animated Disney version was released in 1989.

ariel went to ursala and asked her to become human. ursala said that she would do it if ariel gave ursala her voice. after that ariel said ok and then they made a deal. the deal was if ariel got to meet the price she had 3 days to earn true loves first kiss. if she did not get the kiss ariel would become a mermaid again and belong to ursala. but if she did get the kiss she would stay human forever. then when ariels time ran out and she didn't get the kiss she became human and ursala took her. ariels father said ursala could have the throne if he got ariel back. so the deal was made. then ursala tryied to destroy everything. but the prince came and killed ursala. then the kingdom was restored. and ariels dad took pity on her and turned ariel human forever and she married the prince. the end.

The tale is quite different than the Disney cartoon. it is more or less a morality tale against Miscegeneation- again with Parental defiance the Mermaid goes to the sea witch ( a more or less friendly character in the story- not the movie) and she does get her ground legs- she also loses- first her voice and eventually her life- for making love to a Non-Atlantean-- she dissolves into the water- well ahead of schedule- in the tale I seem to recall ( this was omitted in Disney version) Mermaids live for a maximum span of 300 years ( three times the human max)- and then effevesce or dissolve into the ocean form- so there are no Mermaid bodies washing ashore- fossils, etc- this is a neat science fiction touch to explain the lack of Mermaid bodies or fossils!

The Little Mermaid was first released on VHS in the year 1990. This was one year after the movie came out in theaters.

The fictional character, lilke the way this lends realism to fairy tales, had to be at least in his mid-twenties as he was lieutenant in the Danish Royal Navy as evidenced by campaign stripes. My guess, as this seems to be the Royal House that the Danes have or had- after Marrying Prince Eric- she would Be HRH Princess Ariel Von Rosenthal- and that is not hot air ( late Blimp admiral please forgive me!)
