What should you do if you say the word Macbeth on stage?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

i know of two ways to counter the curse.

One is to go outside, turn three times counter-clockwise and spit over your shoulder (either will do).

The other, which my school is using, is to say "Angels and ministers of Grace defend us." at the beginning of each rehearsal and to close each rehearsal by saying:
"If we shadows have offended, think but this and all is mended, that you have but slumbered here, whilst these visions did appear."
We say the end bit as a group before we light the ghost light each night.

How have we modernized Shakespeare's plays today?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Sometimes they're not!! A good example of a successful movie adaptation is "Romeo + Juliet" with Leo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. This play was set in modern times, with cars, gas stations, automatic pistols, modern clothes, etc. The original dialog was retained and contemporary music was used as well. "Richard III" was updated to WWII era and some of the dialog was rearranged, but overall it worked anyway. Many others have been filmed and updated as well. On stage, they are also sometimes set in other time periods, but often are not. Because these plays generally run 3 hours, which is way too long for most modern audiences, a lot of directors cut non-essential dialog and/or characters. On stage, projections could be used in, for example, "Hamlet" when his dead father appears and tells Hamlet that the father was murdered. The 3 witches in "Macbeth" could be projections as well. But Shakespeare doesn't need any extra gimmicks or additional special effects. There's already enough violence and poetry without any superfluous nonsense!

What is the difference between an exterior and an interior scene?

User Avatar

Asked by Julialuv16

This is easy as an "exterior scene" would be filmed open location, outside and an "interior scene" would be filmed in a closed location, such as a apartment, home, work location. Essentially, due to the magic of Hollywood, both scenes can be filmed on a set with a variety of backgrounds. Coincidentially, the "establishing shot" is edited in to give the viewer an idea of where the scene is taking place. Take, for instance, the opening of "everybody loves Raymond", there is an establishing shot of a home supposed in a residential neighborhood. Then the scene in the kitchen where Amy is made knowledgeable to the fact that Raymond told his wife who told his father who told his wife who told her other son that "she likes to talk" is called a cheap shot. There is a whole gender of movie scenes that are available on a website i haven't had time to research such as love scene, drama scene, action scene, with a subset of interior love scene, exterior action scene, so many scenes, you would have to be a director to know them all, and, then again, the director has a few scenes up his sleeve.

What are the given circumstances?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The given circumstances in acting are what the author or playwright have given you as an actor to work with in terms of where you are, who you are, what you are doing, and why you are doing it. For example, your character profile at the beginning of the play (where they list the characters) will tell you something about your character. In "The beauty queen of leenane" by martin McDonagh, there is quite extensive character notes. These character notes are your Characters "Given circumstances." The setting, an old cottage in county leenane are your given circumstances for WHERE you ARE. Sometimes, however, the playwright may give you no in-depth information about your character, as in Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, where all he gives in the character section is "Estragon, a tramp." All you know is that Estragon is a tramp. However, throughout the play, you find out pieces of history, and this is another source of GIVEN CIRCUMSTANCES. As either Stanislavsky or Strasberg once said ( I don't have my notebook on me this instant) "sometimes the inspiration for your character may not be obvious, but hidden within the line of someone else's character"

Simply put, the given circumstances are whatever you are given to work with, be it pieces of history, emotion, costumes, settings, character relationships.
