TI-83 & TI-84 Graphing Calculators

There is not cos2 button on a TI-83 plus. You will need to enter the cosine function and then square it. (Press the x2 button to get the squared function.)

To type cos2(90) on a TI-83 plus, for example, type:

cos(90)2

The square root button is about the "x2" button. Press 2ND and then x2 to use it.

If you want a cubed root, press MATH and select 3√(.

If you want any other root, press MATH and selcect x√. For example, to find the 5th root of 32, enter 5x√32.

The easiest way to learn how to use a new calculator is by trial and error. This calculator is very powerful if you know how to use it, but it can be confusing at times. (though much less so than the more powerful TI calculators. And a helpful hint in general, if you are looking for a specific function that you can't find using menus, try looking in the catalog.

Press APPS and select Inequalz to turn on inequality graphing. (If it is already on, choose continue.) Press Y= and there will be a little X= in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Select it and press ENTER. The equations will change to X=. This allows you to graph vertical lines (you cannot graph equations like x = y, it must be x = a constant). Put 1 into one of the X= equations and press graph.

(To turn of inequality graphing, press APPS and select Inequalz. Choose Quit Inequal.)

A program that you make (using the built-in TI-Basic language) will be saved when you close out of it. You will however lose it when you replace the batteries.

One measure you can take to preserve your program is to change only two batteries at a time. This will normally prevent the program from being erased.

Another thing you can do is archive the program. Press 2ND MEM (above +). Choose 2:Mem Mgmt/Del... and then 7:Prgm... Press ENTER next to the program to archive it (which will be indicated by a star). Archived programs will not be deleted when you change the batteries, but you cannot run them until they are unarchived.

Finally you can put your program in a group to preserve it. Press 2ND MEM and choose 8: Group. Create a new group and put your program in it. (You will need to put a least two pieces of data in a group.) Ungroup you group to use the program later. Groups can also be used to help store more information on your calculator.

You can't really type fractions, but you can use the divide function to create the fraction line, and imitate it in a way.

dim mismatch occurs when you are trying to multiply matrices whose dimensions are imcompatible or when you are comparing two lists of unequal lenght.

I assume you are asking how to graph another line, so I will answer that question. Pressing the (Y=) button will pull up a menu allowing you to input an equation to be graphed. You can press the up and down arrow keys to navigate to the another Y= entry space. Just type in your second equation and hit graph. You can do this for up to ten lines by default.

Hit the mode button, scroll down to the line that says, "MathPrint Classic."

Once you have that line highlighted, hit the right arrow to highlight Classic, hit enter, and presto, no more MathPrint mode. Exit with Clear.

An "invalid dimension" error means that either you tried to store a value to a spot i n a list or array that doesn't exists, or that the lists in a stat plot don't have the same number of entries.

If you're just trying to graph something, press Y= and deselect the plots at the top.

If you're trying to use a stat plot, check to make sure that the lists used in the plot have the same number of entries

You'll aslo get an invalid dimension error if you try to store a number to position 8 in a list with only 4 values, for example, since the list has no position 8.

There really isn't one. I checked the Catalog. You can, though, substitute, with (number)/100

change the batteries!

There are two types of batteries in the ti83 calculator -- ordenary AAA batteries and one flat one. Buy new ones and change ... or else be more specific when asking.

It's up to the instructor. Obviously you can use it for homework... I mean, who's gonna know? ...but some instructors have restrictions on what kinds of calculators are allowed during exams.

Short answer; you can't. But you can purchase (or borrow) a TI84 calculator and use the TI83's transfer cable to transfer data from the 83 to the 84 to your mac computer (the TI84 comes with a USB transfer cable).

(This does not work with mixed numbers, only fractions and improper fractions.)

Type the fraction as a division problem. For example three sixths would look like 3/6. Before pressing ENTER, press MATH and select the first option, >Frac. For example, if you are simplifying 3/6, you will see 3/6>Frac. Press ENTER to see the simplified fraction, in this case 1/2.

The on button is in the lower left-hand corner. It should say ON on it.

When the picture you want is on the graph screen, press 2ND and then DRAW (above PRGM). Scroll over to STO at the top. Then select the first option, StorePic. (Use the second option to see a stored picture. Follow the same instructions, but you do not have to have the picture on the graph screen.) Press ENTER and then type the picture number you want to store the picture to; any number for 0 to 9. (The calculator can store ten pictures.) Then press ENTER. The picture will be stored.

Press STAT, then go down and select 5:SetUpEditor, and press ENTER. After you have done this press STAT again and 1:Edit to check and make sure L1, L2, L3, etc. are all there.

It does not have a normal qwerty keyboard, but all the letters of the alphabet are there.

Use (2nd)(MATH) to access these, and from this menu you have the =,>,<,etc.

On a TI-83, letters are variables. You can use these variables to store numbers. The calculator also uses some of the variables for its storage. If you type A and press ENTER, you will probably get 0. This means that A is 0 (unless you changed it and made it something else.)

To change a variable, press the number you want the variable to be, then the arrow (STO>) and then the variable. For example,

25-->W

will make the variable W equal to 4. You can then use variables in your calculations. For example, if you make W equal to 4 and A equal to 5, then

WA + 3

will equal 23. (4 x 5 + 3)
