The prince Gothama Siddhartha Shakiamuni, the historical Buddha, was always an individual with a keen power of deep observation. He always felt there's something incomplete, hidden, behind the charade or facade his father tried to surround him with, to hide the fact that suffering even exists in the world.
It made him want to see through the facade and thus he went out of the palaces to see the world outside. In his four journeys, which his father tried to further stage for the sake of the facade, he did get to see the following: an old man, a sick man, a dead body and an ascetic. These sights triggered his deep compassion and curiosity: he understood that there is suffering in the world, and that this suffering is part of every life, even his, he wife's, children, friends, everyone.
He then decided he have to seek a remedy to the suffering for all, no matter what is the cost - this is how compassionate he was even before his enlightenment.

Yes, there are many lama's in Buddhism. Most great and respected teachers are called "lama" or in tibetan Buddhism "rinpoche" or "geshe"

Why did Siddhartha Gautama look for the cause of human suffering?
Siddhartha Gautama, also know as the Buddha, was born to a royal family who kept him inside of his palace in order to keep him from seeing suffering, decay and the evil that exists in the world. He remained sheltered until he was 29. One day he left his palace in order to meet his subjects, and during this excursion he saw an old man, a dying person, and other various forms of decay. What he saw shocked him so much that he began a spiritual journey to find out what caused evil and how to escape it.
