From how I understand it ticks have chemoreceptors, or organs that can spot chemicals in the air. In a tick's case the chemical is carbon dioxide, which is excreted into the environment anytime any living organism breathes out.

Does sunlight kill dust mites on pillows and blankets?
Yes to a degree it is helpful to put these out in the sun because it kills dust mites. But remember they live deep in your bed. vacuuming will help, but they'll still be some.
Normally not, they prefer grasses and shades... but I have seen hundreds of ticks stuck to concrete walls and see they were just waiting for a tasty host to pass by and "jump" on them...
A tick bite in itself cannot kill you. What the tick might be carrying can, though. If the tick is carrying a deadly or potentially deadly disease, then technically, a tick bite could kill you.
(separate person)...
ticks may borough deep into the skin, so much so that it can look like a skin mark or a simple mole. my brother found one on his upper back today, and a PRETTY DECENT size, too. it embedded itself so far into the skin that only the upper back of the tick was showing as a zit sized skin mark, no legs visible. we got tweezers, band-aids, cotton, alcohol, a magnifier and a locking empty pill container. *note: TICKS CAN LIVE IN RUBBING ALCOHOL! , also the American dog tick and deer tick get confused even by pros, so don't freak if it looks like a deer tick.

Will dish soap help ear mites in cats?
Do not use dish soap in your cats ears. It may do more harm than good and it will not get rid of ear mites. It also cause a secondary infection such as a yeast infection or other bacterial infection by throwing off the ear's natural balance. If you notice your pet has ear problems - odor, shaking of the head, scratching or rubbing at the ears - take it to your veterinarian. There are special treatments for every ear problem, and it takes an ear cytology to find out what the root of the problem is so it can be fixed.

How do ticks protect themselves?
Ticks from the Ixodidae family have hard, armoured bodies to help protect themselves and the fur/hair around the animals they feed on hides them from insect eating predators. Ticks from the Argasidae family have softer, more vunerable bodies and mostly rely on the camoflauge from animals they feed on, like Ixodidae ticks.
Potentially, yes. Tick paralysis is loss of muscle function from a tick bite, usually a female tick, and primarily affects children. The tick attaches to feed on blood and during feeding toxins enter the child's bloodstream. The child will develop an unsteady gait due to weakness in the lower extremities. This weakness will eventually make it's way up into the abdomen and upper extremities. Flu like symptoms can develop and there can be breathing difficulties. Finding the tick and removing it will remove the source of the toxins and recovery from tick paralysis is fast.
