It varies so it is difficult to say there is as average.
On local trains some stations are only 4 to 6 blocks away from each other, others are 9 to 11 blocks away away from each other. In the southern part of Queens on the A line the distance between the Howard Beach station and the Broad Channel station is close to a mile.
On express trains the distance can be a mile or more between stations (the local trains take care of the stations inbetween). Example: on the Lexington Av line there is an express station at 125th St, 86th St and 59th St. Each is more than 20 blocks (1 mile) between. However, the next express station is 42nd St-Grand Central which is only 17 blocks from the 59th St express station (but only 9 blocks from the 51st St local station).

I suppose you are landing in Dusseldorf from the US. Before you leave you can get a Eurorail pass online, but you may/may not buy a ticket direct from German rail ( I could be wrong here). You can get a ticket at the railstation in Dusseldorf when you get there. The Germain trains are great. One reason I mention that you may be able to order rail tickets I tried to find a method to get from St. Petersburg Russia to Findland when I was there and I think I could have reserved a ticket online if I had wanted to take a 14 hour train ride. If you are going soon make sure you take a coat with you to Dusseldorf it is starting to cool down this time of year and can get pretty cold.

Take the Uptown C or E trains (of the A-C-E, the blue line) one stop, from 42nd Street-Port Authority to 50th Street (at 8th Avenue).
Or you could just walk. It's 8 blocks, which is less than half a mile.
