How far does a subway train need to stop?

A train has brakes similar to a car at every wheel (friction brakes), and also can use its locomotive power to apply a braking force (called dynamic braking). If any train wheels lock-up (stop moving) the sliding wheels do not slow the train as quickly as they are designed to do. In the US, modern locomotives use computerized braking systems, as do passenger trains. Freight cars are limited to the friction brakes and often this is where you may see a set of train wheels lock-up when they shouldn't.

Is there a train station near merry hill shopping centre?

Cradley Heath is a short bus ride away with several bus services per hour serving the shopping centre. There used to be a railway station at Brierley Hill, litterally just a stones throw from the Merry Hill Centre, however this was closed in the 60's. There are rumours of schemes to re-open this route, as the track-bed remains in place down to Stourbridge, and north through Dudley to Wolverhampton.

What subway do you take to get to fifth Avenue and 53rd Street?

Take the Uptown E train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to 5th Avenue-53rd Street. Then walk 1 block west on 53rd Street to 6th Avenue.

You'll know which way is west because 5th Avenue is the dividing line between the West and East Sides. So on the west side of 5th Avenue, the street sign will say "West 53rd Street," while on the east side of 5th Avenue, it will say "East 53rd Street."

What subway train should you take from 34th Street to the South Street Seaport in Manhattan?

It's pretty simple. Take the Downtown A or C (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal to Fulton Street.

You'll exit the subway at or near the corner of Fulton and Nassau Streets. Walk east on Fulton Street until you get to the East River. You will know you're walking east because the next street you'll reach will be William Street. If you walk one block on Fulton Street and end up on Broadway, then you have walked west, not east.

What train do you take from Penn Station to 25 West 18th Street?

Well, it depends on whether you're going to West 28th Street or East 28th Street. If you're going to West 28th Street, then you just take the Downtown 1 train (of the 1-2-3, the red line) ONE STOP, from 34th Street (Penn Station) to 28th Street. You will exit the subway at West 28th Street and 7th Avenue, on the west side of the street (the west side of the street is the Downtown side, and the east side of the street is the Uptown side).

DON'T take the Downtown 2 or 3 trains, as they are express trains and will not stop at 28th Street.

If you're going to East 28th Street, it's a bit trickier. There are two options, depending on how far east on 28th you need to go.

First option:

1) Take the Uptown 1-2-3 (the red line) or the Uptown A-C-E (the blue line) ONE STOP, from 34th Street (Penn Station) to 42nd Street (Times Square). On the 1-2-3, the 2and 3 are express trains, and on the A-C-E, the A is an express train. But all six of these trains (the 1, the 2 and the 3, and the A, the C, and the E) stop at 42nd, so it doesn't matter which one you take.

Also note that the A-C-E line does not stop at Times Square, exactly. The A-C-E line runs up and down 8th Avenue, while the 1-2-3 and the Times Square Station are at 7th Avenue. You can still transfer from the A-C-E to the Times Square Station, however, you will have to walk through an underground tunnel to get there. The underground tunnel connects the A-C-E line to the Times Square Station.

So, if possible, it is preferable to take the 1-2-3 from Penn Station to Times Square, to save yourself the walk.

2) At the Times Square Station, transfer to the Downtown N, Q or R trains (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line), UNLESS you are traveling between 11 PM to 5:30 AM. The R train does not stop at 28th Street from 11 PM to 5:30 AM, so you can only take the N or Q during those times.

3) Take the Downtown N, Q or R two stops, from 42nd Street (Times Square) ---> 34th Street (Herald Square) ---> 28th Street.

4) You will exit the subway at 28th Street and Broadway, which is smack in the middle of Manhattan, but closer to the East Side.

Second Option (going further east):

1) Again, take either the Uptown 1-2-3 or the Uptown A-C-E ONE STOP, from 34th Street (Penn Station) to 42nd Street (Times Square).

2) At the Times Square Station, transfer to the S shuttle train (color code grey) east across 42nd Street, from Times Square (West 42nd) to Grand Central Station (East 42nd).

3) At Grand Central Station, transfer to the Downtown 6 train (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line). Take the Downtown 6 train two stops, from 42nd Street (Grand Central) ---> 33rd Street ---> 28th Street.

4) You will exit the subway at East 28th Street and Park Avenue South.

What is the chance of a train crash?

The odds of a passenger being killed on any one flight are approximately 8 million to one.

From PlaneCrashInfo.com: "If a passenger boarded a flight at random, once a day, everyday, it would statistically be over 21,000 years before he or she would be killed."

There are many ways to analyze the statistics, which can be found at the links below.

More information:

The odds of a plane crash depend on a various amount of factors, such as:

  • The type of plane
  • The size of the plane
  • The pilot
  • The time of year
  • The weather

Typically, most plane crashes occur during takeoff and landing. Most plane crashes happen in the months of September and December. Car accidents kill more people each year than the total amount of people killed in plane crashes. Large planes tend to be safer than smaller ones. Most plane crash survivors were sitting in the rear half. The odds of being killed in a plane crash are about 1 in 11 million. There is 1 in 3 chance of living if your plane crashed.

With all these facts considered, it is impossible to calculate the odds of a plane crash. Remember, it is a very rare occurance.

If you or someone you know is worried about plane crashes, show them these facts above; and take the following precautions:

  • Always take direct flights. Since most plane crashes occur during takeoff and landing, reducing the amount of times you have to get on and off a plane is a good idea. When it is not possible to do so, find something with the fewest stops possible.
  • Many crashes are caused by bad weather. For example, flying during peak thunderstorm times (late evening in the summer) should be avoided. Flying at night is no safer than flying in the day.
  • Try to get a seat in the rear half. If you cannot, sit in your assigned seat and after the flight attendants do the announcements, check to see if there are any free seats in the rear half. If there are are none, see if you can trade.

When was the Manchester to Liverpool Railway built?

The inaugural train of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway travelled on 15th September, 1830, drawn by the locomotive 'Northumbrian'. It carried many notable people including the then Prime Minister, the Duke of Wellington. Another passenger was William Huskisson, member of Parliament for Liverpool. When the train stopped at Parkside for other locomotives to pass in review on the other line, Huskisson was run over by the locomotive 'Rocket' (which had won the Rainhill trials for Robert Stephenson), and died of his injuries later the same day. A memorial to him still stands by the line. The Liverpool and Manchester railway was the first public transport system wholly to use steam power.
