Can cola cause a stomach ulcer?
That's an interesting question. I think, in the absence of H. Pylori infection in the stomach or concurrent use of NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc) or heavy alcohol intake, that cola consumption _shouldn't_ cause an ulcer, although it can indeed cause gastritis or dyspepsia, including acid reflux/heartburn (sour stomach, indigestion, burning sensations in the stomach and in the chest).
I suppose it is possible that excessive consumption, especially on an empty stomach, could cause an ulcer even in folks who are not using NSAIDs and don't have H. Pylori infection.
I think the best answer would be from a gastroenterologist.
I used to drink diet cola for years and never had a problem and gave it up. Now, I started drinking it again and my stomach just feels like it is burning and there is a slight nauseating and mild achiness there. I drank it on an empty stomach. Tea will do this too.
I know that caffeine increases stomach acid production by stimulating the proton pump. Phosphoric acid is not good, but your stomach lining can tolerate a much stronger acid such as hydrochloric acid, so I am not sure if it is strong enough to erode the gastric mucosa.
I'd ask a specialist about this. Either way though, cola drinks are not good for you. Phosphoric acid increases the risk of kidney stones and leeches calcium from your bones. Taken with a meal, cola drinks interfere with vitamin and mineral absorption and can cause people prone to anemia to develop anemia by inhibiting iron absorption from food.
Stay away from cola or only drink 1 can a day. If you feel any unpleasant symptoms in your stomach after drinking it, quit and drink water or something much more healthy.
I hope this helps, but I think the jury is still out if cola _by itself_ can cause stomach ulcers. It is a fact though that cola will aggravate a preexisting gastric ulcer (not sure about duodenal ulcers though).
