From 1860 to 1861, Ulysses S. Grant lived with his family in Galena, Illinois. He later moved to Springfield and Cairo in 1861 during the Civil War. In 1865, after the end of the war, he moved back to Galena.

I am not exactly sure what you mean. Grant's prestige as an officer grew rapidly during Civil War . He entered the army as a colonel and ended as the commander of all the union armies. After he was president he went on a world tour and was generally received as a hero. His autobiography came out just before he died and was a huge seller. When he died the nation mourned and an impressive memorial tomb was built for him.

Grant was mostly successful. He had problems with his farm when he left the army. His presidency was marred by scandals which he was personally clear of.

He lost most of his savings in a bad investment after he left office. He developed throat cancer which led to a painful death.

One of the first battle conflicts for US Grant came at Belmont, Missouri. He led an expeditionary force of 3,000 troops against a Confederate outpost in Belmont which was located across the river from Columbus, Kentucky. Grant had been able to push the Rebels back, however, they counter attacked and forced Grant to retreat, ending the small battle.

Grant had a gift at adapting military strategy to fit his present conditions. He figured out how he could make use of his advantages and win a ling war. He also showed a surprising talent for writing he was pressed to write his memoirs. He also had a gift of resiliency- being to recover from failures and disappointment without giving up.

The near-disaster at Shiloh in Tennessee, April 6-7, 1862,when he was caught off-guard, and his whole army nearly pushed into the Tennessee River. They rallied just in time, then reinforcements arrived, and the enemy commander Albert S. Johnson was killed. The battle was then hailed as an important Union victory but critized in the press. THe uniion lost over 13,000 men; the Confederates about 10,700.
