Several UT students wanted to support the UT baseball team before their game with Southwestern University. The students needed some ribbons, so they went to the nearest store and bought the two ribbon colors available - orange and white. Several publications then began using orange and white as UT's colors, although the official colors were disputed until they were finally settled in a campus wide vote in 1900. Orange and white won by beating runner up orange and maroon as well as a handful of other color mixtures.
There was still controversy as to what shade of orange would be used. In 1949, a bright orange color was officially chosen, and was used in the seal 8 years later. When football coach Darrel K. Royal arrived in 1962, he switched the player uniforms to a darker, "burnt" orange color. When people started referring to this darker orange as the correct color, alumni complained and an investigation ensued. The findings of this investigation stated that the darker orange had been used longer than any other hue and was widely known as "Texas Orange", and this became the prevalent color ever since.
