What are the symptoms of a bladder infection on males?
I know that one of the symptoms is that the dog is often unable to control when and where it urinates. Sometimes they'll leave a lot of little puddles around the house. Also if it's severe I think that there can sometimes be blood in the urine. * ALONG WITH THE FREQUENT URINATING AND PRESENTS OF BLOOD THERE CAN ALSO BE SOME SWELLING IN THE LOWER ABDOMEN RIGHT AROUND WHERE THE BLADDER IS LOCATED AND AN UNUSUALLY STRONG SMELL OF AMMONIA AT TIME OF URINATION.. PLEASE GET YOUR PET TO THE VET ASAP, BLADDER INFECTIONS WHEN LEFT UNTREATED CAN LEAD TO POTENTIONALLY SERIOUS AND SOMETIMES FATAL SECONDARY INFECTIONS... Kechara

What if you don't get treatment for a urinary tract infection?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs anywhere in the urinary tract between the urethra (the outlet "pipe") and either or both of the kidneys. If it's confined to the urethra it's called urethritis. If it's in the bladder it's cystitis. If it travels up the ureter to the kidney it can develop into pyelonephritis, which is inflammation of the upper urinary tract. Acute pyelonephritis usually results from bladder infection (cystitis). It is usually treated with antibiotics and painkillers. Untreated and repeated UTIs may result in chronic pyelonephritis, which can eventually cause permanent kidney damage. A bad urinary tract infection left for over a year would undoubtedly cause some damage, if not to the kidneys then to the bladder. At the very least you would need to keep the urinary tract flushed out with copious amounts of non-caffeinated liquid.

Intermittent bladder irrigation?
if the question is dealing with exccessive urination it could be caused by an enlarged prostate it could also be the bodies way of releiving itself of exxess fluid possibly from high blood pressure the body gets rid of waste products through the urinary system such as excess sodium, potassium and other by products the body can't use
2/18/2008 Continuous bladder irrigation is also used following a medical procedure to the urinary system. I have seen it used most frequently with prostatectomies. The prostate is extremely vascular and bleeds excessively following removal or reduction. A special foley catheter is inserted into the urethra with a Y type adapter to allow fluids to go both in and out. Large bags of normal saline are used to continually flush the bladder. It is very common for the normal saline to come back out as bright red blood at first. Eventually, the normal saline will run clear and the irrigation can be discontinued soon after. I have not seen many complications but as with any procedure there is a risk of infection. A rupture would also be possible if the output port was clogged and fluid continued to run in. Electrolyte imbalances would be possible as well. This is an impatient procedure so just being in the hospital has its own set of risks.
What are is the functions of the kidney and bladder?
The kidneys act as a filter to remove toxins (harmful materials) from our blood. There are two ureters (one for each kidney) which connect the kidneys to the bladder. Urine passes from the kidney where it is stored temporarily in the bladder. A urethra connects to the bladder and opens on the outside of our bodies, allowing the stored urine to be eliminated when we urinate (pee).

Well the bladder of course is a reservoir, it's a storage vehicle for urine. Its primary function is to keep the urine in a place that is water tight without letting the urea and the waste products be reabsorbed into the body until the individual can find time to empty the bladder. A whole sequence of events occurs when the bladder has filled and a signal is sent to the brain that there's been filling. Basically, the urethra has a sphincter muscle within it; one in women, and two in men--the second one being within the prostrate gland. So the first step is that the brain has signalled that the bladder's full, and the urethra, or urethras, will then relax, and allow opening of the channel, then the bladder will contract, thus expelling urine from the body.
Lower left side back pain and left side abdomen?
If it hurts more with bending and twisting, it is most likely muscle-related. It it hurts when someone pushes on your abdomen, but not when you bend or twist, then it is more apt to be internal. There are hernias that can cause a bulging in the area you indicate, but I doubt that a hernia in the front-side of your abdomen would be a cause of back pain, unless you have more than one thing going on... If this continues, or begins to get worse, then I strongly suggest you be seen by your family doctor for possible Xrays, etc and surgical referral...
