Why did sailors scrub the deck?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Tradition goes back to the early days; A normal sailor's duty every day was to 'scrub the deck', first by scraping every foot of the deck with a hollystone, essentially sanding it, it also removed tar that seeped from in between the planks. Then the deck was mopped down with saltwater to remove the dust, tar, and splinters, on some occasions, blood, if it was a fighting ship.

Most sailors couldn't afford proper shoes, many went barefoot, scrubbing the deck would ensure the sailor was able to do their job without getting splinters in his feet

Where can you find the list of the chain of command on a ship?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Chain of Command is very simple, that is until you get into the upper echelons. It begins with the lowest link in the chain, the common seaman. At the top is the President of the US (Currently Barrack H. Obama). In between is every rank and pay grade through the DOD and Defense Secretary. Specific questions regarding COC should be put into context of unit and command.

Did women serve in combat positions in World War 2?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They did not serve "combat" positions, however they did serve in dangerous roles as nurses and in other non combat military occupations. Most women in the military during WWII were used to free up jobs in the US, to allow for more Men to go overseas to fight. The largest role of women during WWII was leaving the home to take over jobs for men as they went off to war, by doing so, they ran factories, made bombs, equipment and kept our country running while the boys were off at war. The above answer applies to the United States only. Soviet women were
in actual "combat" in various capacities (pilots, snipers, etc.).

Who scrubs the deck of a ship?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It depends on the deck (interior or exterior), but generally all enlisted members below Chief Petty Officer wind up scrubbing decks at some point. Depending on the ship or submarine type, there may be a division assigned for maintenance of the exterior ship's deck. On a submarine, it's known as Deck Division, and is made up of non-nuclear enlisted personnel. On a surface vessel, there is a specific division called First Division, responsible for shipboard exterior maintenance, including the decks.

Interior decks are usually maintained by offgoing watchstanders or the division responsible for the space. Most ships have a daily/watch cleanup, and a weekly shipboard cleaning schedule, and assignments are given out by the Senior Petty Officers in charge of each division.
