I will say, the Marines are very tough, but the Army is right up there with it, and the Air Force, is becoming way more like the Army and the Marines in that their PT is just as challenging, they learn the EXACT same stuff the others do, tactics, rifle usage, etc. The same amount of stress is put on them, and they carry the same attitudes that you Mighty Marines do. Basic training (boot camp) is required the summer before you begin at the Naval Academy. If you are thinking of the harshness of it all, the Marine Corps boot camp will be as it is concentrated into 3 months, however, the Naval Academy will stretch it out over 4 years. It may sound strange, but getting to E-3 is tougher than getting O-1 by going to ROTC and getting commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. Why go through the hell of Lancing out of boot, when one could instead go for a commissioned straight out of university. No OCS, just ROTC and commission.

Whatever you feel like writing. If you're sending a postcard, where the writing is openly visible, you would want to use discretion in what you wrote on it. Or, if you wanted him to suffer it out a little bit, you could do like what someone did to me and write something like, "Well, I was very surprised to hear that your Drill Sergeant is gay and that he wears a navel ring..." on a postcard. Army's basic training lasts 9.5 weeks, not counting processing. Some MOS's allow you to go through OSUT (one-unit-station-training) OSUT is basically where you combine basic, and your mos school (AIT), into one, condensed, time. Infantry, for example, is now 13 weeks, you spend all 13 weeks at the same spot, being taught by the same guys.

It is 8-9 weeks of learning how to do things exactly as you are told. You will learn to pay attention to detail.

Essentially, it is not very hard. If you are in any kind of shape, the physical aspect is easy. Even if you are only in mediocre shape, you can get through the physical part. Know how to swim (only the absolute basics of swimming and floating are required. Believe me, I can BARELY swim and I passed on the first attempt).

Here are some quick points:

1. Learn how to shut the hell up and listen.

2. Do everything exactly as you are TOLD to do it, don't overthink things.

3. You will be given a study book. Study it.

4. Try to be able to do your end requirements for the physical test before you leave for basic. Good rule of thumb for males is the run in under 12 minutes, at least 60 pushups and 60 situps, females about 13-14 minutes and 40 pushups and 60 situps. Just a good rule of thumb before you go. It helps.

5. You don't have to know how to swim, (they will help you), but be able to.

6. You will get up at 6AM every morning and go to bed at 10PM.

7. You will eat 3 meals a day.

8. Your division will get inspected constantly.

9. Take only the clothes on your back, wallet, and cell phone. The cell phone and your personal clothes will get mailed home after you get your 20 second phone call home to let whoever know you made it there. The wallet stays locked up in you locker.

10. DO NOT whine, complain, backtalk, or god forbid CRY when you are getting disciplined. It makes it get much worse.

11. You will get exercised to exhaustion regularly as punishment as a division, try not to get this as an individual for something stupid you have done.

12. You will learn firefighting, damage control, weapons (barley), line handling and marching.

13. You will get about 3-4 calls home when you are there. Bring a phone card, and you can buy phone cards when you are there as well.

Hope these help. The best thing I can tell you is never give up at anything. If you are being punished by exercise and can't move your body anymore, wiggle something but don't give up! You have 2 months to work as hard as you can and to do what you are told to do.

You don't pay to go. Transportation (either bus fare or airfare) is provided at MEPS. You have that option to switch, however the US Army does not have to technically release you from your contract until you fail to ship for Basic Training (it is the same way for all other branches). Now as a US Army Recruiter you have to understand that when you enlisted in the Army you got to choose your specific MOS based on you ASAVB score, where in the Marines you will choose three career fields and which ever one opens first the Marine Corp will give you. People enlist into the Marine Corps for one of four reasons; 1. They like the uniform 2. They think they are hardcore 3. Family tradition 4. Following their friend's. You don't join the Marine Corps for job experience or college money, don't get me wrong they are a great branch of service but they are also the smallest branch. They are controlled by the Department of the Navy, the majority of their training is conducted at an Army installation, and if you are not located at Paris Island, Camp Lejeune or 29 Palms you most likely will be on a ship with the Navy. Think about it there is a reason why you choose the Army first.
