How many veterans are still living from the Vietnam War?
The total number of wounded from both sides in the Vietnam War was 2,096,037. This includes US, ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam), South Korea, Australia, Thailand, New Zealand, and NVA/VC (North Vietnamese Army/Viet Cong).
In addition to the 58,220 US soldiers killed, the total number of US wounded was 303,604, with 153,303 of those wounded to the extent that they required a hospital stay.
Veterans are important because of the sacrifice and risk that they undertook on behalf of their country and its citizens. Whether voluntary or draft, they were at risk to protect the rights and freedoms of the rest of the citizens. They served so that you didn't have to.
Why does the US honor veterans on Veterans Day?
Remembering veterans is a way to honor the people in the military for what they have done and are doing and the sacrifices they have made, including their lives, to ensure our way of life. Veterans are very important people and I think they should be honored in numerous ways. Veterans should be honored because they once dedicated themselves into doing a noble act. The ultimate sacrifice that was given by few veterans to benefit the many people of the United States of America was provided by many years in ghastly wars and battles. Put the politics aside and just consider the soldier who doesn't make much money, get much time off, or is away from his family months at a time but still, people in the military have a fundamental belief they are protectors of our country. Veterans put their lives at peril because they wanted to fight for their nation's freedom. Instead of sitting down on a snug armchair with a soft robe on sipping tea, they go out and fight for what's right. Veterans sacrificed the time spent with their family because they go out to battle other troops, not being able to be in the same room as their loved ones. Veterans contributed their efforts to make the U.S safe, even though they could have passed away at any second.
The question is misplaced, it's not what veterans do for us, it's, what veterans did for us!. Veterans gave themselves completely and solely to defend this nation in the event of war. Our veterans are the backbone of this country.?
November 11 was chosen as Veterans Day because it was the day the Armistice was signed in 1918 ending World War I. It was originally called Armistice Day and was changed to Veterans Day in 1956.

What were the feelings of the hippies about the Vietnam War?
It does not help to answer a question with a question, unfortunatley however, I think we must ask, "what is a hippie?" While I served in the Vietnam war, I also served in the Korean War and WWII. During WWII I think the hippie would have been more properly named "Zoot Suiter" by virtue of his style of dress. (Chains, finger-tip length sports coats, peg leg pants, pork pie hats etc.). As I remember they were inoffensive and mildly upset with the war. Very young service men (kids) didn't like them and normally couldn't tell you why. Generally speaking if there was trouble between them it was because the service men started it. Then it was a simple matter of "getting even." During the Korean War period, the "hippie" was generally characterized as young people lost in an idealistic dream world, speaking out and dreaming of a life in which there was no sickness or sadness or poverty or work. They generally met at neat little coffee shops and read their own poetry or sang their own folk music. I always felt it was their avowed mission to drive the older generation "nuts." They were for the most part good young people who eventually grew up and became good and responsible citizens. As for the Vietnam era hippie - I am not sure there were any. They could not by any stretch of the imagination be confused with "protesters." And protesters in no way would confuse themselves with hippies. Protesters, were deadly serious with a deadly mission and even though I am a retired military man with 26 years active service - I could not fault them for speaking out against a tragic, useless loss of life. If I can expand on this please don't hesitate to email me. jjdrobertson@cs.com

How did soldiers mail letter during World War 2?
Mail was delivered by the civilian Postal authorities to the Military postal authorities. The military then handled the mail delivery to army units, navy ships, etc. The mail would have been carried to/from the trenches by soldiers. Most military units have sailors or soldiers that are "mail clerks" that sort incoming mail & gather out-going mail. These clerks would distribute the mail to the units, the leaders of the units would get it to the soldiers. If you have seen American war movies, many show the scenes when the soldier responsible for getting the mail to the troops calls out "mail call", and soldiers gather to get mail.

Why do some veterans refuse to wear the poppy?
Commonest reason I guess is "cant be bothered". But of the active non-wearers, the argument seems to center on not wanting to appear to support either existing wars or war centric policies of past governments, or more generally wish to avoid glorification of war. This is simpleminded tosh. Wear a poppy to commemorate those who died. They didn't have a choice. Their sacrifice was not a moral or political position made real. They were then the victims of political, moral, or human failure. Wear it to remember the individual dead, nothing else. And thank God we can no longer be required die for our political donkeys.
Can a veteran transmit an agent orange disease to his spouse?
No, the disease is not contagious. Only exposure to the agent can cause problems.
The VA will divide the "Viet Era" vets into two groups: Those that served in country and those that did not.
Example: When filling out forms for the Agent Orange program(s) (for exposure) the VA will issue the veteran a map of South Vietnam. On that map the veteran will indicate areas in which he served.
Obviously, if he didn't serve in country, the map is invalid. And so is the medical service attached to it.
