Why did the US get militarily invovled with Vietnam?
From the perspective of the early sixties, the United States was at a point of high tension in our relations with the Soviet Union and Red China. One of the consequences of this tension was a tremendous respect (fear?) of anything communist.
When Vietnamese communist forces defeated French forces, the U.S. government was concerned that their Allie, South Vietnam, would fall to communism. As a member of the South East Asia Treaty Organization, the U.S. had promised to protect South Vietnam. U.S. forces were sent to South Vietnam to train their army.
When our troops began to face assaults from the North Vietnamese communist troops, more U.S. military assets were added to protect the trainers. This cycle continued to escalate until 1965, when entire divisions began arriving in South Vietnam to push communist forces back into the north.
Because of the concern over communist encroachment on other countries throughout the world, U.S. presidents were quick to use their military to stop that communist growth wherever they found it.
How did the americans react to the Vietnam war?
Most Vietnamese people at the time were in favor of communists (which were also portrayed as patriots) - like President Eisenhower had written: "[if a free election had been hold] 80 per cent of the population would have voted for the Communist Ho Chi Minh" - so it is very easy to understand that they saw Americans as invaders and who worked for South Vietnamese government as collaborators. Therefore, Vietnamese always think of their war as a war of resistance (against imperialism), a moral war and they are very prod that they have defeated the most powerful country in history.
What activities do you do on Veterans Day?
You could visit family members who are veterans or you could visit a veterans hospital and donate items to our troops. You can also watch the ceremony for the tomb of the unknown soldier, or other veteran honoring events at 11:00 am.
As a veteran, I would say the best way to celebrate Veterans Day is simple. For one, just be thankful there are people out there that have gone and stood for you and our country. Also my personal opinion is just enjoy the pleasures, rights, and freedoms you have that we as veterans fought for. We don't expect any big thanks. Your going to work and living day to day is thanks enough in my opinion. So all in all to celebrate Veterans Day, do whatever you enjoy best: drink a beer, go fishing, spend time with friends and family, whatever it is that you enjoy most because those things are what we (or I personally) went to war for. So just be thankful and enjoy life. :)

Should the US have gone to war in Vietnam?
This is a personal politics question that I will not answer yes or no to. I will, however, give the rationale for the war.
First and foremost, Soviet Russia was a major threat to the US, and by extension, so was Communism. All the Communist countries in the world had sided with the USSR, and we were at risk of another World War. When the Communist North attacked the Democratic, US-supported, South, we were compelled to act through a variety of treaties. This was also a good time to test the US's military might against a Communist power.
The North received backing from both China and the USSR. Originally, we were there only to train the South's army. However, they showed such habitually poor performance that we were compelled to pick up a large load of the fighting. Despite being five times the size of the North's military force, the South couldn't stand up to the North.
Due to political pressure and virtually no vocal support of the war, the US pulled out and South was overrun, causing the deaths of millions.
Why were Vietnam veterans called baby killers?
This was a disparaging term applied to US soldiers because of incidents of both accidental and deliberate killings of children and infants (by both sides) during the Vietnam War. The term was used by the most vociferous opponents of the war, and was an undeserved epithet for the majority of the US military who served in a difficult conflict, often with ambiguous directions from their superiors.

He was so unpopular with the American people because he didn't do much when the Great Depression started. The people wanted him to do something and he did nothing. Is there a list of Purple Heart veterans from Vietnam?
try this web site and do some looking it has some good info if any thing do a google search http://www.purpleheart.org But remember, a complete or comprehensive list of this type does not exist. No comprehensive list exist of Commendation Medals, Bronze Stars or Silver Stars exist for this period. The rarity of the Navy Cross awarded in the Vietnam War means that a complete file may soon be ready for pubication, but this document is still riddleded with potential errors. For Historians to compile lists that meet the rigorous mandates of academic research are very nigh impossible. Accurate killed, wounded, died of wounds, missing and presumed dead, missing, prisoners of war, died while a prisoner and died of non hostile action are always suspect. Modern technology allows more accurate battefield reporting. Wars and conflicts now involve smaller numbers compared to the Great War, WWII, Korea and Vietnam and war statistics are improving. Lists indicating awards and entitlement for an award are far more accurate for actions today then they have ever been.
Ask the DoD how many atomic bombs they have and the answer will be enough, or that's classified or we don't know. Ask the Air Force how many aircraft they own and the answer is surely close within 25 percent.
The numbers can be fudged and in Vietnam they often were. Some that won the "heart" lost their limbs or their eyes or their lives. No list exists. Bless them all/
