Visible Light Spectrum

Join us here to ask and answer questions on the "illuminating" topic of the visible light spectrum. This includes questions about: refraction, reflection, rainbows, prisms, mixing colored lights, and the spectrum of colors that make up white light.

Why colour of light become red when it passes through red colour?

White light contains all colors. When white light passes through red glass, for example

(or any red thing that passes light through it), all of the colors except red are removed

(filtered out) so the resulting light only contains the color red.

This is a big part of the reason why that piece of glass comes to be called "red" glass.

What wavelengths of light are part of the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum?

The wavelength can be just about anything - from kilometers to a tiny fraction of a nanometer.

Can visable light be dangerous to humans?

YES. Visible light is the leading cause of death of humans on the Earth and is extremely dangerous. THIS IS IMPORTANT. If you see visible light in the wild, DO NOT APPROACH IT. I am the administrator of the Organization for Protection Of Humans from the Dangers of Visible Light (OPOHDOVL). Always remember to watch out for visible light in the daytime. That's when they get you!

Why is visible light not harmful?

They can be to your eyes: too much light and you go blind. We use visible light daily to see so any frequency in the visible range is not harmful in/and of itself; but an excess of anything is bad for the human body.

What is a piece of glass that separates the visible wavelengths of light?

A prism is a piece of glass that separates the visible wavelengths of light by refracting, or bending, different colors of light at different angles as they pass through the prism. This causes the colors to spread out, creating a rainbow effect.

Peugeot 306 brake light?

I have recently changed one of mine. All you have to do is lift up the bonnet and where the headlights are go behind them and there will be a simple hinged cap that u can simply pull open. Inside there will be a clip, remove that and out pops the headlight!

What electromagnetic wave IS perceivable by humans?

Visible light is the only electromagnetic wave that is perceivable by humans. It ranges in wavelength from approximately 400 to 700 nanometers and is the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that our eyes can detect.

What wavelengths are in sunlight?

The Sun Light spectrum is 275nm to 2850nm . This includes Visible range, almost near IR radiations and a part of UV radiations. In simple, sunlight spectrum ranges from middle of middle UV to almost till Near IR radiations.

What is the color of ultra violet rays?

UV is invisible to humans. There are no ultraviolet colors.

How is laser light different from incandescent light?

The intensity of light from most light sources is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source. So the intensity two meters from an incandescent lamp is one quarter of the intensity at one meter, and at three meters from the lamp the intensity is one ninth of the intensity at one meter. Laser light ideally has the same intensity at any distance.

What visible color has the shortest wavelenght?

Violet has the shortest wavelength and red has the longest. Anything longer than red is not visible to the human eye. Violet has a wavelength of 0.0004 mm.

What color is part of an visible spectrum?

The spectrum contains all possible hues. It's kind of silly to ask what color it is.

What wavelengths of light does chlorophyll absorb the best?

The blue and the red spectrum of visible light is best absorbed by chlorophyll.

Which color of light in the visible spectrum has the highest energy?

Photons with higher energy correspond to electromagnetic radiation with higher

frequency/shorter wavelength.

In the visible band, the color with the highest frequency is the last one you can see

on the VIOLET end of the spectrum.

What is the different of an incandescent light and an LED light?

Incandescent Lights are basically a glass cover inside which there is an inert gas, like nitrogen, argon (low wattage ones use no gas, just a vacuum)... and there is a filament which gets heated when current passes through it... the hot filament emits light and heat... whereas an LED doesn't have gases (or a vacuum) or a heated filament... it has a semiconductor junction which emits light directly by diffusion and recombination of electrons and holes.... thus it produces less heat... and its life is much longer.

Which color of visible light has highest frequency?

Below are the typical ranges for the frequencies of each color.

Red 384 - 482

Orange 482 - 503

Yellow 503 - 520

Green 520 - 610

Blue 610 - 659

Violet 659- 769

So, violet is the color with the highest frequency.

How do light waves interact to create color?

They don't interact to create color, each individual light wave has a specific color. They "interact" to produce white light (all colors).

What is invisible light energy wih wavelenghts?

Any wavelength shorter than roughly 400 nanometers, and any wavelength longer

than roughly 700 nanometers, is invisible. That is, its presence is not detected by

the human eye.

Does light travel through a one way mirror?

Yes, light travels through a "one way mirror" but only a small part of the light, most of the light is reflected. In fact light will travel both ways through a "one way mirror"!

What makes a "one way mirror" appear to act one way is if the room on one side is brightly lit and the room on the other side is dimly lit, in the brightly lit room the reflected light from the brightly lit room swamps out the small amount of transmitted light from the dimly lit room and the mirror appears to be an ordinary mirror, but in the dimly lit room the transmitted light from the brightly lit room swamps out the small amount of reflected light from the dimly lit room and the mirror appears to be a window.

Why do different compounds have different colors in visible emissions?

different compounds give different emission colors because of the energy level of there electrons when they form. all visible emissions are directly related to the energy levels of the electron. the more energy an electron gives of in the forming of the compound the more visible the emission will be. the lowest being red and the highest being violet.
