Virginia and Maryland. DC used to be part of Maryland and is still mostly surrounded by that state.

It will take you about 1.25 hours to drive the 50 miles (80 km) between the two locations. Of course, that will depend on where you actually start and end your trip, the route you take, and how fast you drive. It also does not account for any stops you might make along the way for fuel and bodily functions.

It used to be, but the Virginia "side" of DC was ceded back to Viriginia. Now, all that's left is the former "Maryland side".

The District of Columbia itself is located near Northern Virginia (it is only about five miles from Arlington, VA) and within easy driving distance of Baltimore, Maryland (about forty-five miles). Washington DC also has two airports and an AMTRAK station, so it is not difficult to get to other cities.

The drive will take about 5 hours and you want to try to miss rush hour in Washington, Baltimore Philadelphia/Delaware, and NJ/NYC.

The best time to leave is around 5am. This will get you to Philadephia around 8am, you have some traffic there, but you can take the turnpike and miss most of it. This will also take you into NYC after rush hour has ended.

Alternately you can leave DC anytime after 7pm and get to NYC at midnight.

Although many believe that DC was modeled after Paris, it is simply not true. DC was actually modeled after Versailles with an iconic building in the center and large avenues going away from it. Paris only became a city with large public spaces and large avenues in the late 1800s. In the late 1800s the city was designed to look like Versailles, and ironically, DC.
