There is a chance of showers today, May 21, 2014, for Omaha, NE.
yes it always does !!
Ottawa Ontario? Of course! Ottawa gets plenty of snow every year. Right now the overall atmospheric pattern is pretty bad for cold and snow in this region. It has to do with a few things, including the large-scale atmospheric mass balance in the Arctic, the Pacific, and our ongoing La Nina. The pattern may not break until Christmas or even the new year, but it will get better. Besides, Ottawa is far enough north that things could certainly come together before that to bring some snow, even when the pattern doesn't favor it. It doesn't look good for a white Christmas, but you never know in Ottawa.
Wintry showers are forecast for the north west of the UK for the next 2 days

Why are meteorology instruments important?

Meteorology instruments are crucial for accurately measuring atmospheric conditions, such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, and barometric pressure. These measurements help meteorologists predict weather patterns, understand climate changes, and issue timely warnings for severe weather events. By providing essential data, these instruments enable better preparedness and response to natural disasters, ultimately saving lives and minimizing economic impacts.

Why long-term forecasts are not very accurate?

Long-term forecasts are often not very accurate due to the inherent uncertainty and complexity of predicting future events over extended periods. Factors such as changing economic conditions, technological advancements, and unexpected global events can significantly alter trends and outcomes. Additionally, the reliance on historical data may not account for new variables or shifts in behavior, leading to potential inaccuracies in projections. As time extends, the cumulative effects of these uncertainties can magnify, further diminishing forecast reliability.

What factors make a storm surge weaker or stronger?

Storm surge is generally made stronger by several factors:

  1. Stronger winds.
  2. Larger area covered by strong winds.
  3. Longer duration at a higher intensity.
  4. Lower barometric pressure, though this is a smaller contributor.
  5. High tide, though not a component of storm surge, can add to it in what is called a storm tide.

The opposites of these will lead to a small storm surge.

Originally storm surge was correlated with wind speed alone, but this was discarded.

Examples:

  • In 2004 Hurricane Charley struck Florida as a strong category 4 hurricane. This would normally bring a very large storm surge, but the storm was small and had only recently intensified from a category 2.
  • In 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast as a category 3, but due to the storm's enormous size and having recently weakened from a category 5, it had an enormous storm surge.

What does weather percentage mean?

"While it's possible to predict the temperature, say, with a reasonable degree of certainty, precipitation is much chancier. The best forecasters can do is to give the probabilities, which they do by having the computer compare present conditions with historical data. When you hear there's a 10 percent chance of rain, that means that out of the last 100 times the weather conditions were just like they are now, it rained 10 times. (More or less--I'm obliged to oversimplify a bit.)" "As for your last couple of questions: a 100 percent chance of rain means that out of the last xnumber of times things were just like they are now, it rained every time. (It does not, incidentally, mean it's raining right this second.) On the question of how reliable the figures are, the amazing truth is that they are absolutely 100 percent reliable all the time--that is, presuming the raw data were fed in properly and the calculations done correctly. Remember, we're just talking about probabilities here. A probability isn't "wrong" if it tells you there's only a 10 percent chance of rain and it rains anyway; it's only wrong if a series of such predictions doesn't pan out over the long haul. Not much comfort if your dermis gets damp next time you're out on a picnic, but it'll have to do." --CECIL ADAMS answer from: http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_115b.html

A Weather forecast helps an engineer to know the next day's weather and he can plan his work accordingly. Weather forecasts can help the engineer to know if there would be a storm the next day, if he should stop his work,etc.....,.If weather forecasts are not regular many disasters like, collapsing of houses and if fishermen went into the sea without knowing the whereabouts of a storm then they would drown obviously.
