Has a whale got teeth?

It depends, there are two types of whales, baleen whales and toothed whales, toothed whales as you would expect have teeth for chewing or tearing into food, examples are dolphins and killer whales. But baleen whales like the humpback do not have teeth at all instead they have a plate of bone like material made up of the same material as finger nails, which they use to filter feed.

Are whales covered with scales?

What characteristics would be used to classify a whale?

Waters, as well. Whales are found in open seas throughout the world and occasionally in coastal certain species migrate, while others remain year-round in the same habitats. The skin of whales is usually black, gray, black, tan and white, or all white. Their skin texture is smooth, but like other mammals, whales have hair at some point in their development. In adults it's usually found only in the head area, and in some species only in the fetus. Whales store energy in an under skin layer of fat, or blubber. The ability to store "fuel" in the form of blubber helps whales survive during long periods of starvation. Except for having horizontal tails that move up and down, rather than side-to-side, whales have the general shape of fish, though in certain species the head is greatly enlarged. Over millions of years, hind limbs have vanished but shortened forelimbs remain. Whales breathe through lungs, with some large species remaining under water for as long as two hours. Whales are not fish. They are mammals. A mammal is an animal that has lungs and breathes air. They also have hair on their bodies. Whales are sea mammals that live in the sea. Whales give birth to babies. They are called calves. The females are called cows, and males are called bulls. The calves do not have any blubber. Blubber is a thick layer of fat under the skin. Dolphins are whales. They enjoy frolicking near ships at sea. A whale breathes through its blowhole. When it sleeps, it closes its blowhole very tightly. It is almost like it is holding its breath.

How does a starfish protect itself from being eaten?

Some starfish can shed a arm to distract the predator and then re-grow the arm in a matter of weeks.

What are any of the several baleen whales?

Baleen whales are characterized by having baleen plates for filtering food from water, rather than having teeth. Living Mysticeti species have teeth only during the embryonal phase. Fossil Mysticeti had teeth before baleen evolved. The suborder contains four families and fourteen species.

What whale has the biggest brain?

Be careful what you accept as fact. The true answer is that the blue whale's brain is approximately 6000 grams or 13.2 pounds. And, while it is the largest animal, its brain mass is still second to the "Bullhead" or Sperm whale, at 7800 grams or 17.16 pounds. This possibly makes the Bullhead whale the most intelligent animal on the planet. Most of these whales are aware, especially the Orca.

Another interesting fact is the great white shark's brain size is one oz or 28 grams.

Brain size does not mean intelligence.

Why is a whale is endangered?

They have been hunted for skin, meat and because it is thought to be a threat to fishing lines, by stealing fish already hooked.

Additional Info: After checking the US Fish and Wildlife Service List of Endangered Species, then checking the NOAA Fisheries Office of Protected Resources, and finally checking the IUCN Red List, which lists status as "data deficient" with the population trend "unknown", and another site stated they were at Low Risk. This species is protected by the CITES listing. It is apparently difficult to gather reliable information on this species due to it's broad range, and lack of inspections for by-catch nationally. They are in the research phase concerning it's populations trends, and habitat usage studies but at present it is listed, but not as "endangered". There are several research studies on this species' life history, breeding/population and stock structure based in Hawaii currently. Also The NOAA Fisheries Office of Protected Resources is conducting field studies on this species as well. For more details, please see sites listed below.

You are right in a way but that was in the old times history but now people have found a way to protect these beautiful animals, i have done a big big big!!! project on Orcas (also know as Killer whales) Orcas are not regarded as ab endangered species. people really need to learn were they are putting there garbage and they are polluting the air for all endangered or invasive species

Killer whales travel in packs like wolves and share many of the same hunting strategies.

Are whales gentle or mean?

Depends on how you treat them. Like at Sea World Amusement park, the killer whales are nice because the workers love and care for them. Just to let you know most of them are nice. ____________________________________________________________ Whales are referred to as gentle giants, however, whales are wild animals and being such are prone to unexpected and unpredictable behaviors. Reports have been filed of whale attacks, as well as whale rescues.

What the difference between whales n fish?

There is a great different between fish and whales. Fish can stay underwater and never come to the surface. They breathe through gills. Whales are a mammal, meaning they have lungs they breathe through. Whales have a blowhole in which they come to the surface for air. Same as which a dolphin does. A fish has a vertical tail. A mammal, whale and dolphin, has a horizontal tail.

What is the population of a whale?

There are 2 main types of whales (baleen and toothed whales). With toothed whales, some of these whales are classed as dolphins such as killer whales so the total only include the population of named whales classed as a toothed whale like killer whales.

The global population is between 1.5 Million and 2.55 Million. Reasons for the huge range is that some whales and killer whales haven't got a well known population and they are either unknown or there is no conclusive data of their populating.

Is a whale a mammal?

Yes, the whale is mammalian. They live in water but breathe air through a blowhole, similar to the humans' nose. They hold their breath to dive underwater. Like most mammals, they bear live young and nurse their young with milk.

A whale is defined as any of the larger cetacean mammals having a streamlined body and breathing through a blowhole on the head. This means that whales are mammals.

They're warm blooded, bear live young and also suckle them with milk.

A toothed whale?

There are many Toothed whales. Here are the most widely known:

Sperm Whales

Killer Whales

Beluga Whales

Narwhals

There is others such as Bottlenose Dolphins, but they are not under the classification of 'whales' in General.

Some examples of toothed whales are Orcas/Killer Whales, Pilot Whales, Beluga Whales, Sperm Whales, and a few more examples.
sperm whales

white beluga whales

black beluga whales (pilot whales)

orca whales
Toothed whales are a very large suborder of cetaceans, including sperm whale, beaked whale, orca, and dolphins. Most toothed whales are smaller than the baleen whales. The teeth can be very deferent between species. They may be numerous, with some dolphin bearing over 100 teeth in their jaws. At the other extreme are the narwhal with its one long tusk and the almost toothless beaked whale with bizarre teeth only in males. Not all species are know to use their teeth for feeding. For example, the Sperm Whale likely uses its teeth for aggression and showmanship.
Sperm whales have teeth in their lower jaw, which fits into grooves in their upper jaw.

Is the blue whale omnivorous?

Neither. The blue whale eats krill or shrimp, and it's too big to be prey to any animal. but if you include humans then yes. the blue whale is prey, humans hunt it down for too many reasons.

No. Don't listen to the silly rubbish above, krill are animals that the whales prey on. They are hunted or used to be by us and the calf's are sometimes attacked by orcas.

What products are made from whale bones?

Why do the Japanese hunt whales?

== == == == The official reason that Japan gives for whale hunting is "scientific research". They say the only way to determine the whale's age is to kill it. The purpose of the "research" is to prove that whale populations have improved enough to allow commercial whaling which was banned by the International Whaling Commission in 1986. However, the whale meat is sold as a delicacy. It is likely this is the real reason for the whale hunting. In recent years activists have disrupted whale hunting in the arctic.
