Who was William the Conqueror in the Middle Ages?
He conquered England because after Edward II (the Confessor) died in 1066 without heirs, Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex, claimed the throne. This wasn't acceptable to William because when Harold Godwinson was captured in France, he had to make a duress (forced) oath in front of William (over the bones of two sainted bishops) saying that he would help William in becoming King of England.
William invaded England and won the Battle of Hastings, in which Harold was killed. William assumed the English throne, becoming William I.

How did Duke William of Normandy make feudalism work?
There was already a form of feudalism in England before the Norman Conquest as there was in France.
Saxon society had a heirarchy of warrior Thanes and an underclass of thralles with a class called Churles in the middle, who were sharecroppers on the Thanes land.
After the Norman Conquest of England William simply replaced the ruling class with his own aristocracy. The Saxon Thanes that pledged loyalty to him could rent land from their new rulers, effectively becoming a higher class of Churl, the thralls became serfs under their new Lords. As the system developed the Normans allowed men to pledge themselves for military service instead of paying tax in the form of labour to their Lord. These freemen formed the backbone of the English army in times of war.

There were a number of threats to William's rule, the first being a general uprising of the Saxon people under a claimant to the throne, he quickly took actions to avoid this by replacing almost all important positions within the church and aristocracy with Norman nobles.
