Was Winston churchill one of Britain's greatest leaders?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

As the only man who stood alone against fascism in 1940... while everyone else turned a blind eye, Churchill faced it head on..."Never Surrender"... "We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end".. it was his leadership, inspiration, that led Britain to victory in the Battle of Britain 1940.. without whom the West was Lost. His legendary speech prior to the Battle.... ''if we fail.. then the whole world.. including the united states.. will sink into abyss of a dark new age''

Churchill has an Iconic status in WWII, it was his ability to lead and be inspirational that played a gigantic role in the Allies victory... also as leader he oozed charisma.. "History will be kind to me, for i intend to write it", he motivated his men and all the allies, his quotations are widely referenced today. The world may look very different today without his leadership in WWII...the man is revered.

AnswerThe opinion of Churchill's performance as a wartime leader fluctuated. When he became PM the British were facing defeats on many fronts. Churchill may have been too eager for a victory and may have created additional losses as a result. He is often accused of being rash and having improbable pet projects that he liked to push. His military advisors would often have to find ways to convince him of the unsound nature of his military plans. Overall I think he should be judged by his performance before, during and at the end of the war. He was one of the first to warn of the threat posed by Germany, when in office he was one of the few voices that was full of defiance in the face of crushing German victories, at the end of the war he saw the new threat posed by the Soviet Union. He was primarily responsible for easing the stresses that built up between 3 major nations fighting as allies. Knowing when to push an issue and when to give way. AnswerYES! He is one of the most influentual men of our time. AnswerYOU GUYS EAT SO MUCH Sh1T

Who said Britain and France had to choose between war and dishonor?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

War was inevitable. No matter how badly Britain and France wished that they could avoid war.. there was no possible way that either country could alter what Hitler was absolutely dedicated to do.. which was to bring war to France and Britain. So when they made the decision to keep appeasing Hitler in the vain hope that war could be avoided, they brought dishonor on themselves. So instead of just facing war.. they were now facing war in circumstances that were worse than if they had acted sooner. You are about to relive the same scernio in regards to Iran. Everyone knows that Iran will use the nuclear weapons that they are developing. Instead of stopping them years ago, they (the west) have done nothing except appease Iran. The problem with appeasement is that it appears to have the best of intentions. The problem with pre-emption is that it cannot be known what scale of disaster one might prevent. Hindsight reveals all there is to know. Everyone has a prophetic lie to spread to another's ear. Let's enjoy the new lie. PAX.

Was odette churchill related to Winston churchill?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No. During World War 2, she worked with a British agent in France by the name of Peter Churchill - who wasn't related to Winston Churchill either, but when they were both arrested by the Gestapo, she claimed that she was married to Peter and that he was related to Winston, in the hope that they would get better treatment from the Gestapo. Her ploy didn't work and they were both tortured by the Germans.

Did Winston Churchill believe in God?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

no, Churchill did not have any religious views. (Wrong)

Yes and no. Churchill believed in a sort of Divine providence or God but was very critical of over zealous religion and dogmatism. He was a deist at most. He believed in an afterlife (He claimed to have encountered Abraham Lincoln's ghost while staying at the white house) and often alluded to God in his speeches.

"I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat…. You ask what is our policy? I will say: It is to wage war by sea, land and air with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us: to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask what is our aim? I can answer in one word: Victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road will be; for without victory, there is no survival."

"Which way shall we turn to save out lives and the future of the world? It does not matter so much for old people: they are going soon away; but I find it poignant to look at youth in all its activity and ardour…and wonder what would lie before them if God wearied of mankind"

Who is Chamberlain and Churchill?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

He was a minister of England and Polish people love him because he saved Poland. Neville Chamberlain was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1937 to 1940. I assume you are referring to this one because the category is English history, but there are other famous Chamberlains. The Wikipedia entry on him is informative. He was Prime Minister when World War II began. He tried to negotiate peace with Hitler through appeasement. He made the famous quote, "I believe it is peace in our time" after the Munich Pact in 1938.

Examples of other British Chamberlains:

* Austen Chamberlain was a Nobel Peace Prize winner and British politician. * Joseph Chamberlain was a British politician and father of Austen and Neville Chamberlain. * Richard Chamberlain was a British politician. There are famous American Chamberlains, too, but they have much less impact on English history:

* Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was a General during the United States Civil War. His impact on English history would only be related to the English involvement in the U.S. Civil War. * Richard Chamberlain is an American actor who starred in Shogun and The Thorn Birds, among other television and movie productions. I include mention of him because he has played British characters and I have heard some people erroneously claim that he is British.

Who signed the non-aggression act?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Pact was signed by their respective Foreign Ministers, Molotov and von Ribbentrop, in Moscow, in the early morning hours of August 22, 1939. This cleared the way for Hitler's invasion of Poland nine days later, which began WWII in Europe. Two weeks after Hitler invaded Poland from the west, Stalin invaded Poland from the east. The two dictators divided Poland between them down the middle, with the Vistula River as the boundary, in accordance with a secret protocol to the Pact of August 22. Poland was extinguished as a nation. There were a number of secret protocols accompanying the Pact, which made Stalin and Hitler partners for the next two years, until Hitler turned on Stalin. One of the great ironies of history is that the only person on the planet Stalin trusted was Adolph Hitler.
