What do you do if your cell phone gets wet?
This actually worked for my phone, which I dropped in a (used) toilet and flushed but fished out at the last second. I have the Verizon Pantech Crux.
Procedure:
- Immediately remove the phone from the water source, be it a pool, sink, cup, etc.
- Do NOT turn the phone on. This risks permanently damaging the battery and rendering the phone beyond repair. (If you did turn it on, don't panic and still follow these steps.)
- Fill a container large enough to hold your phone with dry rice. this could be a plastic bag, box, cup, etc.
- Remove any extra pieces from your phone, such as the battery cover, case, etc. as well a the battery itself.
- Place all the pieces of the phone, as well as the battery, in the container filled with rice.
- Try your best to completely cover all pieces with rice.
- WAIT!! I waited three days. Two to three days is the minimum amount of time I recommend. I now it feels like torture, but the longer the phone is in the rice the more time the rice has to absorb the water.
- After at least two days, remove the phone from the rice.
- Take a paper towel and dry off any remaining drops of water you see. This also helps remove rice residue.
- (Optional) If you'd like, take your vacuum and place the smallest nozzle you have on the hose of the vacuum. Use this to suck water out of cracks. Exercise extreme caution as to not suck up any tiny parts of the phone.
- Now, place the battery back in the phone and turn the phone on. If only the starting screen comes on before the phone goes black, you may need to simply plug the phone into the charger.
If this worked, congratulations!! Your phone is hopefully back to normal.
If not, check if your warranty covered water damage. This is unlikely but worth a check. Most phones have strips on the inside that change color once they've gotten wet, so a manufacturer can tell if the phone was wet. if your phone doesn't have one then you may be able to convince the people at the store you simply dropped it, which many warranties do cover.
Also check if your phone is insured. If it is, the insurance likely covers water damage and you should be provided with a new phone.
