Wolves

A carnivore related to the jackal and domestic dog, two species of wolves are recognized. One is C. lupus, the gray or timber wolf, which was once widely distributed in North America, Europe, and Asia. The other is Canis lupus rufus, the red wolf, which now only occurs in northeastern North Carolina and on St. Vincent's Island off the Gulf Coast of Florida.

What does Omega mean in a pack?

The omega is the lowest ranking wolf in a pack. There is usually only one omega in a wolf pack (I think). The omega is picked on by other members of their pack. Omegas are important because the other wolves can pick on them to relieve stress and settle arguments, therefore reducing tenseness and grudges in the pack. Just a personal theory, but the omega might also keep the pups of the pack busy and happy by giving them attention so the mothers can have free time.

Grey wolves have no critical natural enemies, although bears sometimes dig up wolf dens to kill and eat young wolf pups. The grey wolf's only critical enemy is the human, who unhumanley shoots and poaches the wolf. We also cut down their forest homes and use their bodies as hunting trophies or to sell. Some horrid people also capture wolves as pets in cages and sell them for dirty money. To what are wolves related?

Yes, wolves are related to dogs. They all come from the canine family. Dogs descend from wild wolves and they share lots of behavioral traits such as marking territory and barking just like cats are related to lions. They are all part of the Feline family.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The above is partially misleading. Almost all animals mark territory and wolves do not in fact bark as domestic dogs do. It really isn't quite so simple. While they are from the same overall family [Canidae] they are in fact from very distinct branches. The wolf is from Lupine, the fox from Vulpine and the Dog from Basal.

Latest genome research has revealed that the common ancestor of wolves and dogs was a large wolf like creature that lived in Europe between 9,000 and 34,000 years ago. However so much time has passed and genetic shift occurred that dogs today are in fact more closely related to each other than they are to wolves. They are at best very distant third cousins. The difference thus is less like a domestic cat and a lion and more like humans and orang utans.

The study by Adam H. Freedman and published in PLoS Genetics is easily found online and will offer a more detailed examination of the latest research including insights into the domestication of dogs.

Dogs actually desend from wolves

The pups often preform 'fake-fights' with each other, which is absolutely friendly and thought of as a game to the pups.
