Not very. The Royal Navy (of the United Kingdom) had managed to achieve a blockade of Germany and was effectively starving the nation of all resources it could only achieve through importing. France, Britain, and Italy were worn down and hadn't made any geographical progress, but Germany had less manpower and industrial capacity combined. The fuel shortage and harsh winters of 1917 made a severe impact on both sides on the home front, many civilians were killed simply due to being unable to warm themselves. However, with the American declaration it had pretty much sealed victory against Germany and Austria-Hungary. The Red Baron was downed by enemy fire 3 times. He was downed the first time on March 6, 1917 but did not receive any injuries. On July 6, 1917 he was downed for the second time and received a head injury that required him to spend time in the hospital. On April 21, 1918 he was killed when his plane was brought down by most likely antiaircraft fire from the ground.

Before airplanes took over the role, and became capable of others, the only way to get a high enough view to see the enemy was in an observation balloon. With the style of war being based on trenchworks, one could not get a proper view without getting higher in the air.
