Native Americans were the first to be enslaved in the United States, and the conditions of their enslavement were most times much worse than those of Africans which came later. The First African Slaves were brought here by the Wealthy Black Owner of a Slave Ship, who claims that most of the slaves were either purchased from their tribes and families or joined the trip freely, preferring slavery to the starvation, disease, and early deaths offered them if they stayed in Africa.
Let us be clear about one thing, less than 20 percent of the Blacks brought here came from Africa, but rather than Africa most came from captured Island peoples from the tropics world wide.
Those which did come from there, many times "Sold" themselves into "Indentured" slavery, as is still the common practice in many places in Africa and especially the Sudan, where people routinely sell themselves into slavery to benefit their tribes or their families or both.
There were so called "Slaveholder Laws" which attempted to dictate what, how, when, and how much slaves were given to eat, made to work, saw a doctor, given clothing and shelter etc. but, none of these laws had been designed to ensure that more humanitarian treatment was applied to the Native American Slaves. They were often kept outside in any and all kinds of inclimate weather, in open pens like cattle, and not given food or water, but were expected to forage for it themselves or die, most of them, being that they were kept locked in open air pens, died, when not from starvation and overwork, then from the diseases that the whites were happy to impart to them without medicines to help them, so literally millions died from this cruel and inhuman treatment, but this was not why blacks were brought here.
The Blacks were brought here, because their Black Slave Ship owner thought it good that they no longer would spend all there time running from certain death in the jaws of wild animals or early death due to lack of food and rampant disease, and it would turn him a rather handsome profit. This is about all I recall from the history studies we did on how Black Slaves got here....I am sure that there is more information available about the wealthy Black New York Socialite who owned and operated that first slave ship that landed in Virginia, but I am not in possession of that information at this time...hope this helped answer your question somewhat better than the "Cruise ship and Coca Cola" explanation which was found here before....thank you.
What caused African slaves to be brought to the Americas was the demand for cheap labor. They replaced indentured servants.

African slaves took the place of indentured servants in the Americas because they were seen as a cheaper and more abundant labor source. The demand for labor in industries like agriculture and mining exceeded the available supply of indentured servants, so African slaves were brought over to meet this need.

Improvements in conditions in Europe brought about a decrease in people attempting to leave the continent as indentured servants, and with the rise of the African slave trade, the need for indentured white servants that the colonists had to pay and eventually release decreased dramatically.

When the colonies required indentured servants or slaves it was to do the work. The first slave arrived in Jamestown in 1609 and after tobacco got a start in the colony workers were needed. Indentured servants didn't work out as well, so more slaves were brought in than indentured servants.
