Drugs and Grapefruit

Drugs when taken together with grapefruit may result to undesirable drug interactions. Grapefruit contains ‘naringin’ which affect drug absorption and inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme in the small intestines. Patients taking cyclosporine are advised not to take grapefruit juice.

Why you cannot mix grapefruit and simvastatin?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

why can't you drink grapefruit with zocor or simvastatin:

The risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis is increased by high levels of statin activity in plasma. Simvastatin is metabolized by the cytochrome P450 isoform 3A4. Certain drugs which inhibit this metabolic pathway can raise the plasma levels of simvastatin and may increase the risk of myopathy. These include itraconazole, ketoconazole, and other antifungal azoles, the macrolide antibiotics erythromycin and clarithromycin, and the ketolide antibiotic telithromycin, HIV protease inhibitors, the antidepressant nefazodone, or large quantities of grapefruit juice ( > 1 quart daily).

Grapefruit juice acts as a potentiator when it comes to xanax. In other words, when the two are mixed, the xanax will hit you harder and much quicker than it would as prescribed by your doctor. So if you were prescribed xanax as a remedy for anxiety or panic attacks, it would probably just knock you out instead, especially since xanax already has a big "drowsy" side effect to it.

Hope that helped answer your question.

Can you eat grapefruit while taking the mini pill?

I did a quick check of the literature and could not find any warnings about grapefruit and olmetec. However, I have read generally that grapefruit tends to make it so more of a medication get absorbed into your system than can be expected through the normal digestive process and hence the effects of the medication are strengthened which may not be a good thing. Double check with your doctor. Whatever they say should be good advice.

Is it safe to eat grapefruit while taking triamterene hctz?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you take amlodipine -- or any other kind of calcium channel blocker -- do not take them with grapefruit, grapefruit juice or grapefruit dietary supplements, because serious, possibly fatal, reactions may occur. Grapefruit inhibits your CYP34A enzyme, a protein that helps your body metabolize drugs. When your body fails to properly metabolize drugs, you may end up with more of amlodipine in your system than intended, causing an accidental overdose. Some drugs -- and some people -- react more strongly than others to the effect of grapefruit on your CYP34A enzyme.

What meds does grapefruit interact with?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Dextrometorphan should not be taken with Grapefruit as you will probably get hallucinations.

Edit: If you are taking normal doses of dextrometorphan and you do not have a rare sensitivity to it (because of an enzyme in your liver, or lack thereof), then grapefruit will have no effect whatsoever. As a matter of fact the relation between eating grapefruit and the effectiveness of dextrometorphan has not been successfully demonstrated. The problem with grapefruit-drug interactions is that sulfur-compounds in grapefruit juice may affect the way many meds are metabolized in the liver. This involves many antihypertensive and cholesterol-lowering agents and should probably be avoided.

How soon after eating grapefruit can you take medicine?

The first person who answered this question is an idiot. Grapefruit juice contains CYP3A4 inhibiting compound so yes, it does interact with various drugs, xanax being one of them. 3YP3A4 is the enzyme which metabolises xanax so drinking grapefruit juice with xanax potentiates the xanax because less of the xanax gets converted into inactive metabolites. Its not dangerous to take xanax with grapefruit juice at all, it just makes the xanax a little stronger so the obvious way to counteract that is to take less xanax. Heres a list of drugs that are metabolised by CYP3A4 (and thus potentiated by grapefruit juice):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CYP3A4#CYP3A4_ligands

the substrates box contains the drugs metabolised by the enzyme. If you look in the inhibitors box, you'll see the compounds in grapefruit juice.
