Asked by Wiki User

The muskox is more closely related to the sheep and goat than to oxen (of the Bos taurus species) but are a part of the Bovidae family, as are all sheep-, goat- and cattle-related speices. They have their own genus which is Ovibos (ovi=sheep, bos=ox), with the scientific name of Ovibos moschatus.

Muskoxen have long wool-like hair and curved horns They are social creatures and live in herds numbering from 10 to 20 to up to 70 animals. They are native to the arctic areas of Alaska, Canada and Greenland. In the 19th and 20th centuries muskox had been wiped out in Alaska, but have since been reintroduced. What is a musk oxens habitat?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Muskox live in northern Canada and Greenland as well as in Alaska, where they were re-introduced. They were also reintroduced in northern Europe and Asia. A link is provided to the Wikipedia article on the muskox, and a map indicating its range can be found there.

Note that there are two colors on the map showing the range. One is the range of the animals where they were re-introduced, and the other color is the range of the animals prior to re-introduction biology. It should be noted that the muskox was re-introduced into the places where it once roamed but, for whatever reasons, had disappeared.
The musk ox lives in the tundra, which is a natural biome. The tundra is a very cold biome, so the musk ox has, over the years, adapted to the conditions of the tundra.

Will Musk Ox and Bison breed together?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The answer to that is most likely yes, over 95% of all species of animal originated from tropical rain forests. They migrated north and south and adapted to the various biome climates. Elephants adapted long fur during the Ice Age and took on the identity of woolly mammoths.

You can compare the hair on the bodies of humans from the tropical regions to those of let's say Denmark or Sweden, you'll find that even people up in the colder regions have adapted more body hair.

Another adaptive trait for animals that travel to the extreme north from the rain forest, is that they become more black-and-white and color. Where in the rain forest, they are very colorful.

How do Musk OX adapt themselves to polar region?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They have big long guard hairs that protect them from the cold and under those they have a wool like hair called qiviut which is very warm and protects them from the cold. They have uniquely shaped hooves so that there are able to dig through the snow to get the forages (grasses) below. They get their food from the grasses below the snow and their water intake from the snow! Quite clever and environmentally adapt animal probably explains why they have been around for 1 million years!
