The storm most well known as hurricane Floyd never hit Florida and the states was not significantly affected. The storm instead made landfall in North Carolina. There was also a Hurricane Floyd that affected The Florida Keys in 1987 but did not result in much heavy damage.

New York State had 10 deaths as a result of 2011's Hurricane Irene. One of these deaths occurred in New York City, on City Island (which is part of the Bronx). A man drowned while attending to his boat in one of the island's marinas.

Hurricane Rita formed in much the same way that other hurricanes form. It originate as a cluster of showers and thunderstorms that moved off the coast of Africa and over the Atlantic.
