The answer is they were searching for trade wealth

Trade routes were cut off between Europe and Asia throughout the 15th century. European countries therefore had to find alternative trade routes, and the overland ones were blocked off by the Ottomans in the Middle East, and Muslim kingdoms in Africa.

during the renaissance, since it was a time of increased interest in art in learning, people invented more adequate things for exploration such as maps and navigation tools. This way, explorers would have a much better time using these tools rather than the inadequate tools they would have before.

The Renaissance was a time of great change in European history. It might help to know a little bit about the Dark Ages to understand why the Renaissance was so revolutional. During the Dark Ages, churches had a lot of influence on everyday thought and the way people lived. Most people couldn't read, scientific research was discouraged. Exploration was considered something to be feared. In some areas of Europe, they realy believed that 'evil things' lurked in those unknown places! By the time of the Renaissance, the church didn't have such a strong influence on peoples everyday lives. People began to think differently. There was a lot of scientific research going on at this time. They had the developement of Nationalism, which to my understanding is kinda' like the developement of a unified country. Commercialism began to develope. Trading starting increasing among the European countries and as far as India. They began looking for shorter routes to India when they found the America's. I think it was probably the scientific advancements and increased trade going on during the Renaissance that led to the discovery of the Americas. This is something I found out recently! Chocolate was discovered here. Spain kept it a secret for a long time. They wouldn't tell any of the other countries where they got it from. I also read that pirates took a Spanish ship expecting to find lots of gold. All they found was dark brown powder. They had no idea of the value of what they had stolen! I think they threw it all over board.
