Got to the Australian War Memorial website: www.awm.gov.au Navigate to 'research and family history'. Using the member's 'regimental or service number' if available or full name and any other identifying details (such as date of birth or enlistment) search for the member's service record.

See response to: "Is there a way to find out if someone served in the Vietnam War without asking them?" Additional information: Barring the obvious; 1. The individual will have to be a male (only men fought in the Vietnam War, Korean War, World War II, World War 1, Spanish-American War of 1898, Frontier Wars of the 1800's, US Civil War, Mexican War of 1846-1848, War of 1812, and Revolutionary War 1776). 2. The man will have to be over the age of 55. There were some men under the age of 18 who fought and died in the Vietnam War, see number in "Statistics About the Vietnam War." So there might be some survivors under age 55, but not many. 3. Photographs sometimes help, but a young 18/19/20 year old man looks alot different than a man in his 50's. 4. The DD-214 Discharge Paper (sometimes called a Discharge Certificate) is the ONE SINGLE PIECE OF PAPER that "ALL" employers ask for. No "Medal" can be issued without orders (written orders), and ALL Medals issued by "order" are listed on the DD-214. All countries served in will be listed on the DD-214. Combat Zones will be listed by the letters "CZ". 5. No DD-214. He didn't serve.

Trying some sources such as the "American War Library", "Department of Defense", "Departments of the Army, Navy (Marines come under the Department of the Navy)", "Department of the Air Force", Department of Transportation (US Coast Guard during the Vietnam War); Veterans Groups such as the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), VVA (Vietnam Veterans of America), Amvets (American Veterans), American Legion, etc. may REQUIRE some Name or Social Security Number. US Servicemen from 1969 to about 1971 had TWO numbers: A social security number & a Serial Number. US Servicemen from 1969 back to WW2 had ONLY serial numbers. 1969 the US Military was transitioning from SERIAL Numbers to SOCIAL SECURITY Numbers. From about 1990 (Operation Desert Shield/1991 Operation Desert Storm) to present ALL US Servicepersonnel will have ONLY Social Security Numbers. Barring all of the above: Every US Serviceman who served in the Vietnam War will have been issued a DD-214 (US Military Discharge Paper). It is only ONE sheet of paper & consists of ALL data; Name, Rank, Serial Number (and/or SSN), Unit discharged from, dates of service, Medals earned, and Place of Service (Vietnam).

The "American War Library" might help; or the following Veteran Groups: 1. VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) founded by Spanish-American War veterans in 1899. Our oldest vet organization; the OLDEST veteran organization had been GAR (Grand Army of the Republic, US Civil War Veterans, but it died out when the last Civil War vet passed on the early 1900's). 2. AMERICAN LEGION, founded by WW1 veterans in 1919. 3. AMVETS (American Veterans) founded by WW2 veterans in 1944. 4. VVA (Vietnam Veterans of America) founded by Viet War veterans in 1979. In all cases you'll most likely needed a serial/SSN number. The Vietnam War was the LAST US war in which serial numbers were issued to servicemen. Many Vietnam veterans will have TWO numbers; a serial & SSN number, as Vietnam was a transitioning stage for the military.

Ask to see the individual's DD-214, discharge certificate, it's only one sheet of paper. All branches use it...US Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy, etc. If a medal or badge, or rank, or any other such important information is NOT on the DD-214...then it never happened. Only a set of written orders can amend a DD214. If the individual doesn't have one...he never served. Unless it's lost or destroyed; and they can be replaced. If a man served in Vietnam, it'll be on there. It'll most likely say, INDOCHINA SVC: YES OR NO (the appropiate box will have an X in it, plus the amount of time served in that place. And/or it might say "VN Svc" Yes or No (appropiate box marked and a number indicating the amount months or years served in that region). The DD-214 is an official US Government Document.

Either a photo (although with age those might not be accurate anymore) or documents: DD214 or NGB 22 or written orders. The two former documents are discharge papers, one for the Regular Army and the latter for the Army National Guard...both will reflect military orders and past duties.

If a person does not possess WRITTEN orders or documents...that should be proof right there. ALL MILITARY personnel were instructed on the value of those documents, and for a person to not have them, can possibly indicate that they were never briefed on their value...which means THEY WEREN'T THERE TO BE BRIEFED!

His DD214 discharge document will indicate "VN svc" or Southeast Asia service or Indochina svc. It should be marked with a box; yes or no, and then the amount of time served there.
