Hi ej here !. remove cover plate on the bottom of the dash then unplug the connectors go under the hood and remove the bolts that connect steering gear and the shifting rod then go back inside unit and take loose the bolts holding the tilt wheel make sure someone holds the wheel so it will not fall on you.

∙ 16y agodepending on the year Im sure it varies, but for my 86 you simply take off the horn cover, and unscrew the six screws that hold it on to the column. get yourself a steering wheel puller and its self explanatory from there.

Remove the under dash trim below the column
Disconnect wiring, but you may find some of the connectors easier to get at once to column is loose
Undo the the bolts holding the column to the dash and fire wall
Wiggle and pull gently watching for wire etc to get hung up.

∙ 12y agoPull the Air Bag Fuse and use a Steering Wheel Puller available from Auto Parts Store. It's usually just a single nut in the center and the steering wheel is press fit, so it will not be possible to pull it off without the puller tool. Getting to the nut in the center sometimes is easy, just pop off the shroud, other times, damage may occur to the shroud and horn mechanism, so try to find a picture of the steering column before you begin. The dealer lets you look at steering wheel components on a parts drawing, and sometimes that is helpful, however a Shop Manual for your specific make and model car would be better.

You shouldn't have to remove the airbag in order to replace the gas gauge light. The steering column is held up by a couple of retaining bolts. Remove these bolts and the steering column will lower enough that instrument panel will come out easier. The steering column won't drop to the floor when you do this but will hang in midair. If you have a tilt wheel, you might have to adjust the wheel tilt to allow the panel to come out easier. Don't forget to remove the steering column cover though.
