Bloody Mary

Bloody Mary is a children's street legend, usually that the ghost of a local woman, named Mary, will appear and kill you if you say her name three times while looking in a mirror.

There are many variations of the legend, including that it has to be a bathroom mirror, or varying the number of times the name must be spoken.

None of them are true! You can say "Bloody Mary" as many or as few times as you wish, while looking or not looking in any kind of a mirror and NOTHING WILL HAPPEN.

Bloody Mary is also a name given (by her opponents) to Queen Mary I of England. She was called this because under her reign, almost 300 so-called heretics were executed or burned at the stake for refusing to follow her religious beliefs.

The Mary Worth (also known as Bloody Mary, Mary Margaret, etc) story is popular at sleepovers. As the story goes, a beautiful young girl named Mary Worth was in some sort of terrible accident (or occasionally the wounds are inflicted purposely by a jealous party), and her face was hideously deformed. From then on, she is shunned by other people, and she sometimes becomes a witch.

Queen Mary I of England (1516-1558) did have over 300 people burned at the stake for heresy. Her successor, Elizabeth I, again removed England from Roman Catholicism. The superstition around "Bloody Mary" and a mirror is interesting fiction. (Who will try this?) Like most superstitions, it addresses the fears people have that things exist beyond their control that can do them harm. It is easy to say that it isn't real, but the risk is daunting. For those unfamiliar, the story is that if one is in a darkened room lit only by a candle, chanting "Bloody Mary" into a mirror (three, thirteen, or more times) will summon an evil ghost that will scratch out one's eyes. This is a Halloween ghost story.

When Edward VI of England died at the age of 15, he put Lady Jane Grey as the Queen, she was Queen for only 9 days, when her cousin Princess Mary had her beheaded, then Princess Mary took her place, sent her half sister Princess Elizabeth to the Tower of London. And once Princess Mary was then coronated as Queen Mary, she put to death a number of protestants and protestant clergymen. This is where she got her nickname Bloody Mary.

Queen Mary was the oldest child of King Henry VIII. Her father had changed the religion of England and started his own church. Mary tried to bring back Catholicism. She executed many people that opposed this change.

The name 'Bloody Mary' comes from Queen Mary, the one who ruled after of Lady Jane Gray (who took throne for only 9 days), Mary burned over 275 protestants at the stake in an attempt to stem the spread of Protestantism. she also pulled England into a mild state of ruin, she got into a war between her husband, king PhillipII of Spain, and lost Calais, a port city in Europe, and the final foothold on the European continent that England had. Thus giving her the nickname 'Bloody Mary'. ***Her date of death was November 17, 1558. She died by suffering from an ailment that may have been uterine or ovarian cancer.*** ~ ~ I hope this helps, we studied this in my 10th grade class

There is something called a Bloody Mary cocktail made with Tomato Juice. But the real Bloody Mary was Queen Mary I of England. Mary Tudor was the only child of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon to survive into adulthood. She burned reformers at the stake by the hundreds for the "crime" of being a Protestant. There is also tales of a Bloody Mary who appears in a mirror. Some say it is a good ghost and some say it is a bad one.
