Answer: Until humans migrated out of Africa almost 100,000 years ago, everyone was black. Black skin provided protection against the hot sun and reduced the chances of skin cancer. In the cold climates of Europe, especially during the Ice Ages, people didn't need dark skin, but there was a new problem. Black skin produces very little vitamin D when exposed to the weak sun of Europe, especially when most of the body is covered up against the cold.
