The power steering belt on the n15 Nissan Pulsar is located between the passenger cab and the engine. This is a difficult area to work on at home. It may be best to see a professional as exposure of the area is difficult to achieve.
The "freeze" problem can be caused by 2 things. First,,a slipping belt and second and most likely,,a defective power steering pump. If you have a GM model with a Hydro boost sysytem,,make sure the system is bled of all air.
Squeaking tires has nothing to do with the power steering. If you are talking about a squealing power steering belt, then the belt is either loose or worn out and needs replacing. If the pump itself is squealing, and the belt is tight and in good shape and fluid level is full, the pump is bad. on my 1995 dodge neon the AC compressor had seized and since this unit shares the belt with the power steering pump the belt used to squeal like crazy and eventually would break. if this is the case you can go to the dealer and get a belt that would bypass the AC compressor (leave out of the loop) and of course there would be no AC in the car. i had the same problem w/ my 95, i just cut the belt, drove home and bought a 41 INCH belt to bypass the a/c I had squeeky brakes on my 96 dodge neon (expecially after it rained). I just cleaned them off with an air hose and then believe it or sprayed a little window cleaner and wd40 on the drums..ect. I also hear washing with dish soap works as well.
There are many home remedies to quiet a squeaky alternator or power steering belt. But a squeaking belt is usually a sign that should not be ignored. It generally means that... a. The belt is loose & should be tightened b. The belt has aged and hardened and should be replaced or c. Something has gone wrong in the alternator / power steering / whatever and is putting more drag into the system than normal... and should be replaced. So rather than putting soap on the belt (which will make it slip even more in moist weather), i recommend tightening or replacing it & keeping an eye on whatever is being powered by it.
My power steering hose was burst when I was 1.5 hours away from home. All the steering oil was splashed within a minutes. Though it was hard to drive, I came back home without problem. Next day, I went to work and came back home. No problem other than very sticky steering.
One of the components that attach to serpentine belt have failed . Your battery light came on because alternator was not turning to generate engine, and your steering wheel was stiff because power steering pump pulley was not being turned (both driven by serpentine belt).
Depending if you have AC or not they will be different. Using gates(napa) brand belts on an AC equipped Motorhome the power steering to crank V- belt(cog nearest engine and first one on) is 7410. The V-Belt that goes to fan, AC, PS and crank is 7603(second belt that goes on). The third and final belt(w/ 1 air pump) is a V-ribbed serpentine like belt is part number 060557. This belt goes around fan, alt., air pump and crank. Hope this helps. They are exactly what I put on my 1987 Pace Arrow 454 Motorhome,. If you have 2 air pumps the last belt from air pump to power steering would be 7450. Greg
I figured it out. You gotta rent or buy a "pulley" to remove the drive belt wheel right in front of the power steering reservoir intstead of that whole thing. There are two more bolts you have to remove in order to remove and replace the water pump which you can't get to unless you remove that drive belt wheel. Once you do that you're almost home free. I did figure out that "while I was down there" I might as well replace the clamps on all my water pump hoses. Justa tip to any out there who didn't already know.
Belts stretch over time due to the fact that they are under constant tension, causing pulleys to slip when put under load. Also do not throw your old belt away, put in it your trunk in case the other one snaps you have a spare to get you home.
The states home to the 'winter wheat belt' are Kansas and Oklahoma.
