British Imperialism affected India's post-imperial government in a variety of significant ways, and many of those influences remain today. As just one example, British control of India was relinquished in such manner as to maintain generally positive relations between the two nations. This positive relation, though strained at times, has been central in the continued presence of India as one of the many 'Commonwealth' nations connected economically (and otherwise) to the United Kingdom to this day.
