Christianity tamed some fairly grisly people into civil and humane people. The institutions of Christianity also provided primary and formal education for the populous. The Catholics did an excellent job of serving people with medical care, agricultural help, showed them techniques of building and gave them love and acceptance. Protestants did that too but not on the scale the Catholics did. Armed Forces benefited by having Chaplains. There is so much more to the story. There are great books in the Library about church history (HIS STORY).
