I believe this vehicle uses an orifice tube instead of an expansion valve. The tube would be located inside the line from the condenser to the evaporator. To remove the tube, pull it out. If it is stuck, disconnect the other end of the line and apply compressed air. The orifice tube may be ejected at high speed, so be careful.

My wife has a '98 Sunfire and to the best of my knowledge, there isn't a P.C.V valve. (I haven't been able to find it!!) There is no pcv valve on the sunfires year 98 and newer.
A P1406 error code on a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire indicates a faulty EGR valve. This can result in poor engine performance and should be replaced immediately.
To change the expansion valve on a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am, first, ensure the AC system is fully discharged to avoid refrigerant exposure. Remove the dashboard or access panel to reach the expansion valve, typically located near the evaporator core. Disconnect the refrigerant lines and electrical connections from the old valve, then install the new valve in reverse order, ensuring all seals are secure. Finally, recharge the AC system and check for proper operation.
