You need two special tools, A 36mm wrench and a spanner to hold the pulley still. While holding pulley yo use 36mm wrench and a hammer to turn fan nut counter clockwise.
newtest3 Double check all internet imfo. One fellow suggested removing a.c. and alternator... don't. Disable battery, remove shroud, hoses, radiator, leave belt on for now. If you have trouble keeping water pump pulley stationary as you try turning fan clutch nut (to the left to loosen as it's rt. hand thread), note 4 holes in pulley, insert 1/4" bolts, 1 1/2"long, if they're not threaded all the way, it may take some effort (pry with screw driver while turning with wrench). The bolts will lock with fins on the pump's face. I used a 3lb. maul to clobber my wrench, after several hits the nut finally loosened. Now remove serpentine belt, then water pump. 7 bolts(9/16) fasten pump, draw a diagram to keep bolts with correct holes. My hardware is badly rusted, so I'am getting new bolts today. The fan clutch nut was my biggest problem (aluminum to steel) If I ever buy another new vehicle, it won't be American... unless JOHN DEERe or Case markets a product. The more I work on this van, the more parts I find "made in Mexico". Latter learned "assembled in Canada".
The pulley is part of the pump assembly. I don't think it comes off. The clutch fan unbolts from there. Is that what you mean?
u will need a fan puller, find out what way the engin spinns an the fan will un-thred the same direction
on the back end of the fan, bolted to the motor. radiator, radiator shroud and fan has to come off to take it off
Take belt off water pump pulley remove fan from pump (4 bolts) remove old clutch from fan install new with same bolts Put fan back on.
fan clutch screws off water pump fan pump has left hand thread so to remove you need to turn clockwise
the easy way to find it is to follow the lower radiator hose 'till it reaches the engine and that's your water pump. do it with the engine OFF since its going to take you to where the pulleys are. answer the water pump is on the front of the engine the fan bolts to the water pump
The fan is bolted to the front of the water pump with 4 bolts, once the fan is off the water pump is exposed.
Behind the fan, if you yake off the engine fan will descover the water pump regards David
if ther is coolant dripping out of the bottom of the pump on most ,the 4.7 has a hole at the top.with the engine off grab the engine fan an see if it has play.wigle towards and away from engine.if there is play see if it comes from behind the water pump pulley if you can't tell gently pry pulley away from engine and wiggle.you are also checking for play in the fan clutch.which is the circular thing that attaches the fan blade to the front of the water pump.if there is alot of play in the fan clutch it can ruin the water pump bearing because the fan is off balance.
Take off your belt. Take off the fan. take off water hoses on pump. Unscrew all bolts on water pump. There are many. Put new pump in the same spot . Put silicone sealer on all of the connecting metal of the new pump. Place the new pump on and bolt it back up again. Wait a while for the silicone to set and dry.
i just changed mine on a 96 ram w/ 360. in order to get the fan off you can leave the water pump on and leave the belt tightened and bust it loose that way or if you already took it off like i did, put the water pump in a vice and use a chisel and hammer and the nut will bust loose. hope this helps
It's built into the water pump. You have to replace the water pump.
