Turn the belt inside out. you need to get it under the power steering belt and to the other side of the pulley. You can use a crescent wrench to turn the pulley and get the belt under the other one. I am having the same problem with a 99 Protege. I have changed the alternator and aligned/cleaned the pulleys and the problem persists.I replaced the alternator, on my 1997 Mazda Protege, seven times before someone figured out why the serpentine belt kept breaking. It was the belt tensioner! It had to be removed and rebuilt. Now it is working like a charm!! And I havn't had to replace the alternator in over 3 months!!!!
Begin by removing the alternator tensioner bolt. Slide the alternator to the left. Remove the alternator belt. Reverse the process to install the new alternator belt.
Remove the positive cable from the battery post. Remove the cables from the alternator. Remove the alternator wiring harness. Remove the belt by loosening the tensioner pulley. Remove the alternator retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new alternator.
