You first remove the engine.

Next, jack up the car and put it on stands. You've got to drain the transmission, remove the axles, front transmission mount, backup light wire, ground wire and shift linkage from the transmission.

Lower the car to the ground and put a transmission jack under it.

There are two bolts holding the back of the transmission to the car. Remove them, and the transmission will come out.

Where do you put gear oil in a 1960 vw bug?

On the main body of the transaxle you will notice two allen screw plugs, one at the bottom and one on the side. These take a 17 mm size allen wrench available at many classic VW parts sources for little money. Fill the transaxle to the bottom of the side opening to where it just begins to run out. Of course if you wish you can drain the transaxle by removing the bottom one, might be a good idea if it hasn't been done in years.

How do you remove the engine transmission and trans axle all at the same time in a vw bug?

To summarize extremely, follow the same steps for removing the engine and transaxle separately with one important difference. Instead of being able to access the transaxle to frame mounts from inside the bellhousing, you would remove the crossmember by loosening the two large nuts holding it to the frame horns. Of course you would need to remove or disconnect all lines and hoses and wires as you would for engine/ transaxle removal. It is easier to deal with removing the engine first and then the transaxle separately, but it can be done.
