I just replaced mine and we had to go from underneath it. Once you disconnect all the bolts and wires you still have to remove the brackets around it so it will fit out.
First remove the plastic cover above the headlight. Then remove 3 10mm bolts that hot it in place, then unplug wire harness. You should be good to go

The new alternator probably has a faulty voltage regulator.
First you need to remove the radiator to get to it. Once you remove the radiator you have room to work. Second take the top bolt off the alternator and then the long bolt, do not forget to take the belt off the alternator before remove the it. I just changed on about two days ago on a 2004 Nissan quest for a friend.
Take off the negative battery cable then the wires on the alt then the bolts that hold it on. First take off the serpentine belt. There should be a schematic of how to reinstall it on the fan shroud. if it is not there you can draw your own before you take it off. Don't rely on memory.
It is built into the alternator.
It's behind the alternator; screwed to the block right above the thermostat. Good luck removing it. You need to remove the alternator.
