If you look at the radio/cassette part (the separate CD part below as well) you'll notice two little indents on each side. (They may be covered with little rubber plugs.) There's an inexpensive tool, that looks like a tiny metal u-shaped wicket, that inserts into the small indents and pops the unit. The radio removal tool is sometimes listed as a Ford part. They are commonly called DIN removal tool.
You will need to remove the #2 Phillips screw on the back of the radio before using the tool.
Most people insert DIN removal tools too deep and can actually bend the spring the wrong way causing the radio to be locked into place. Insert the din removal tools slowly until you feel the springs and a slight click where the tools pop into place. Spread the tools outward (away from each other) only about 3/4 of an inch, then pull. The radio should slide out of the compartment. Disconnect the 2 harness plugs, antenna plug, and steering wheel control plug.
IMPORTANT: The 1992-95 Mazda 929 radio has a theft-deterant feature that disables the radio when it is removed. When it is reinserted you have to type in the four digit code to reactivate. If the wrong code is put in three times it permanently disables the unit. You need to know this four digit code BEFORE removing the unit. If you do not know the code , check your owners manual on how to input a four digit code of your choosing before taking out the unit.

How to uninstall your factory/or aftermarket stereo in the 2001 Mazda Protege: first you will need a Radio Removal tool. You can buy this at any parts store. you can remove the cover around the stereo, but that is not necessary - you can just pull the stereo out with this dashboard cover in place. remove the vertical tab edges on your car stereo (if it is the factory stereo that came with the Protege) after these are removed, (you can use the tool you just bought to gently pry off the edges), then you will see the holes to insert the removal tool into. Press the tool ends into the holes on both sides, until you hear them click. It's probably about 1 inch deep. Then, pull on both tool edges, the stereo will just pop out then. unplug the stereo, and connect your new stereo. Push the new stereo system back into the slot making sure it's back in as snugly as the other one. You're done. (you may need an insert, or wiring harness depending on the type of stereo you are putting back in. you can buy these were you buy your stereo.)
I had to remove the glove box to get at the right side through there and pop it out, then just pried my way in the left side - had to use quite a bit of force. That factory CD player was garbage. BUY A STEREO REMOVER KIT FROM WALMART, ABOUT $5.00. IT'S WELL WORTH IT. TAKE OFF THE SIDE CAPS WITH A FLAT HEAD SCREWDRIVER. USE THE DESIGNATED TOOL (A "U" SHAPE) TO GO IN THE SMALL SLOTS AND RELEASE THE CLASPS. THEN, THE STEREO/CD PLAYER WILL SLIDE RIGHT OUT.
once a CD is stuck in the player, the player is no good. to take the player out,you have two covers on each side of the player covering a pair of holes. you need to purchase these removal pins from an auto part store like oreilly's or a Mazda dealership can remove for you sometimes for free. to remove the CD, you will have to remove the top half of the screws of the player and remove the CD hold down
On the stereo faceplate there are 4 holes near the four corners of the unit, there is a special tool that fits in there to remove them. Basically the tool uses a straight section of wire poked in the hole to remove the spring loaded tab from behind the edge that holds the stereo in. Four lengths of wire or 4 small screwdrivers in the holes approxiamely 6-8cm will wensure the tabs are unlocked and the stereo should just then pull out. Ensure you have put the screw drivers in far enough as you wont need to force it to get it out.
