There is a tension pulley to the left of the alternator. Put a 19mm socket with a torque wrench on the pulley nut. Turn the nut in a counter-clockwise direction. This will lift the pulley away from the belt and allow you to slip it off. Install is the reverse of removal.
The question you ask is too involved for a proper answer. You may want to go to a car parts store, or book store, and get a repair manual for your car. They cost about $16.00 Or, go to a Public Library.
or........
Turn the tensioner counterclockwise using breaker bar, so you have good leverage, and remove the belt from the accessories. The front engine mount has three legs that connect to the front of the engine (on the passenger side of the car). You have to unscrew the lowest of the three mounting points done from the under side of the car - or - (with your wheels turned to the far right you can remove the plastic shield in the wheel well and with a long extension & breaker bar remove the lower mount bolt). There is a round tube spacer in between the engine block on this bolt of the engine mount that you take out, and you can remove and replace the belt with the spacer removed. It took me about 1 hr to change mine on my 98 Bonneville. If you go though the wheel well as I did you will need a couple of long extensions and a 18mm deep socket.
there is a bolt atatched to the idler pully. you have to loosten the bolt, and then take the old belt off. remember to look at how its routed. put the new belt on and tighten the idler pully. now, between the longest span from pully to pully, you should only be able to move the belt a 1/4 of an inch. the bolt for the idler pully bolt is located on the bracket for the Power Steering pump. the bolt is also close to the crankshaft pully which is centered on the front of the engine block. Alternately: loosen the bolt (15 mm) in the center of the idler pully below the power steering pump. The adjustment bolt is to the right of the P/S pump, angled toward the right. Loosen the adjustment bolt until the belt slips off. Make a diagram and replace the belt. Tighten the adjustment bolt until the belt is tight, as above. Re-tighten the bolt in the center of the idler pulley.
You will need to loosen the tensioner pulley on your 1994 Pontiac Grand Am. The old serpentine belt will come loose and can be removed. Put the new serpentine belt on and tighten the tensioner pulley.
that is a pain in the *** job you need to remove both forward bolts that attach engine mount to engine block to install new serpentine belt if you are not mechanical, get a mechanic
BETTER ANSWER
That is not true if you are dealing with a V-6 engine. It is quite simple. Put a socket on the tensioner pulley and turn it to release the tension on the belt and then slip the belt off of the water pump and alternator and remove. Put the new belt on as shown on the diagram on front crossmember or owners manual and you are back in business. You'll of course need to put your socket on the tensioner pulley again and turn it until you can slip the belt on all the pulleys and then release the tension. Check that belt is seated in groves of all pulleys.
Pry the tensioner and remove the old belt. Then reinstall it with the schematic on the fan shroud. If no schematic, draw one before you remove it. Don't rely on memory.
It shouold be on the fan shroud. If not draw a scnematic before you take the old one off or if it is off, find a used car lot that has a like car and draw your own.
Raise up on the tensoiner and remove the belt then replace it using the schematic on the fan shroud or in the owners manual.
Loosen the tensioner pulley on your 1992 Buick LeSabre. Take the serpentine belt off. Put the new serpentine belt on and tighten it down with the tensioner pulley.
buy a belt, loosen the tensioner, replace belt
Put the serpentine belt around the pulleys on your 2001 Chrysler LHS. Tighten the serpentine belt by pushing the tensioner pulley to the left. Tighten down the tensioner pulley and the serpentine belt will be tight.
Approx. $1,000 USD from a Saturn dealer. You may want to also change the water pump at the same time.
Look at the ribs on the inside of the belt, if they are cracked or missing small chunks then replace as soon as possible. I usually replace mine every 2 - 3 years.
If it has a serpentine belt it should have an automatic belt tensioner If it doesn't have a serpentine belt then alternator should be the adjustment/pivot point
