Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Drain the engine coolant from the radiator to below the level of the thermostat.

Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the engine.
Remove the housing bolts, thermostat housing, thermostat and gasket.
Do not pry the housing off.
To install:
Clean the thermostat housing and the cylinder head mating surfaces.
Make sure that the thermostat jiggle pin is aligned with the gasket projection.
Install the thermostat to the housing. Align the gasket projection with the opening in the housing. The spring side of the thermostat should face into the housing.
Install the thermostat housing cover and tighten both bolts to 14-19 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
Fill the cooling system. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks. Check the coolant level and add coolant, as necessary.

Remove the water supply hose from your 1988 Chevy Cavalier thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing bolts. Lift the old thermostat out and drop in the new thermostat.
follow the top radiator hose to the engine, remove it then remove the thermostat housing, remove the thermostat and replace it
The thermostat is located by the side of the cylinder block near the coolant inlet. Remove the coolant inlet housing after disconnecting cables and loosening the holding bolts. You will be able to remove the thermostat to replace it.,
locate the top radiator hose and follow it to the motor, unbolt the housing it is connected to and remove the old thermostat replace it and put it back together

If your vehicle is equipped with the 4.2ltr 6 cylinder, the thermostat and housing are replaced together, located on the side of engine block behind alternator.
If it's an automatic you will have to remove the exhaust manifold because the thermostat is located on the backside of the engine on the driver's side under the exhaust manifold.
